“Goodbyes” these days are mitigated by technology. And thank goodness for that!

Goodbyes are mitigated by technology.Yesterday I went to a farewell party for two dear long-time friends that are moving to New Zealand. And like all such affairs, the mood was festive and celebratory until it came time to not only say good night, but also to say goodbye.

It’s hard to believe that next week they will be living almost as far away from Newnan Georgia as possible, in a place now ebbing into winter as our hot southern summer approaches.

But even though they will be living in a different hemisphere and a dozen time zones away, some things will not change at all, because technology has made the world a lot smaller than it used to be.

The “open book” social sites do not discriminate by geography, and the ability to connect and share is not restricted by proximity.

Even though they are not here, we will not lose touch. We will always be an update, a tweet, an email or a video conference away.

And so to my dear friends, this is not adieu, but au revoir.

Godspeed and hope to see you soon.

Richard, we had something similar happen in the fall, our friends didn't go quite so far, but not within driving distance for dinner either! We've had a few conversations on Skype with our web cams, so it's almost like their not really gone. Great post!

That's one of the amazing things of living in these modern times.  I love this because you won't need to lose touch with your friends who've moved away.  I'm in better touch with my friends in Jamaica these days because of facebook and text message apps.

Not too many years ago any and all communication was done by snail mail.  Today we can interact quicker that it would take to write a letter.

There was an argument that computers and technologies have driven people to solitary lives, but I agree with you, Richard. Technology has open new venues for communication that were never even dreamed of a short while ago.

Richard,

I worked in the communications industry for 35 years and I'm amazed at the speed with which long distance communications priced have fallen. Keeping in touch with far distant friends and relatives is a snap today.

Richard,

Amen to that.  I've been on both ends of haveing friends left as well as having left friends and places behind.

Technology today to really takes the sting out of all those miles.

Hate to say bye to friends but it give you the perfect opportunity to go visit them as well.  Great that the conveniences of the Internet makes the distance not as bad and communication and keeping in touch so easy.

Richard, it is still a little sad though. I have friends who live states away... and we don't get to see each other very often. But you are right with email, and Face Book, and iPhone Face to Face it is not too bad.

Richard - fear not. Some of us Antipodeans have made our later life home in the US (just to preserve the balance with those standing on their heads in other places) and have been royally welcomed to this country. Some of my Australian friends, however, have been threatening to send a Rescue Party because they think I have been coerced to become a permanent"sell out". In easy verbal communication, they think I have developed an American accent.
