Watch out for Fellow Bloggers

Watch out for Fellow Bloggers

The title has a double meaning. I mean it in the sense of being helpful toward other writers here on AR.

Looking out for each other is an important aspect of being a member of a community. We see it in our neighborhoods. Why not in our on-line networks?

Watching out for each other on-line can be a GOOD thing

So here are some thoughts on how YOU can watch out for your fellow bloggers:

TYPOS

Let others know about major typos, especially in a title, which are such a smack-you-in-the-face mistake. I'm not suggesting we critique each others' spelling and point out every little typo, but use your common sense to let friends know about those glaring errors that make them look foolish. Yep, spell check is a good thing, but sometimes we forget, and it doesn't catch everything.

LINKS

Point out links that don't work. I imagine many of us check links before we post, but mistakes happen, especially if we type the URL instead of doing the Cut and Paste thing. And sometimes links become a problem later on when the original site changes. Broken links are embarrassing, annoying, and make us look bad in front of our readers. Here's a Broken Link Tool.

POSSIBLE COPYRIGHT VIOLATIONS

Let others know when they may be violating a copyright or terms of use (using images from Image Chef is a good example). If you suspect a more serious copyright issue, it might be best to chat with AR instead - you decide.

DATA ERRORS

Bring up any questions of data that might not make sense or which could be typos. We can all make mistakes when doing our own calculations, or creating charts and tables, especially on those darn market reports.

PLAGIARISM

If you see an article that you believe has been copied without permission, why not let the original author know? It happens more times than we would like to think, and I, for one, want others to let me know if I haven't discovered it myself. It's happened to me multiple times and probably 50% of those times I found out from friends. Thanks!

DID YOU MEAN TO SAY THAT?

Let them know if something they wrote really does not make sense, or is clearly a mistake. I am not advocating criticizing someone's thinking, or belittling their post (we see that often enough) but sometimes a well written post all of a sudden goes weird. Maybe the writer had a brain freeze. They said seller when they meant buyer, for example.

 *       *       *       *       *       *       *

You can probably think of other ways to watch out for your fellow bloggers. I know I want to know about these things and I don't take offense, and I suspect most will appreciate it, and they may return the favor.  It helps this be a better place.

Now I wouldn't do this publicly (i.e., in the comments) but send a private email, since pointing the error out publicly could be a bit embarrassing to the writer. Or perhaps take the opportunity to pick up the phone and get to know the other person a bit, then bring up the issue.

Unfortunately some may not appreciate your efforts to be helpful, and may even take offense. So you do have to tread carefully and decide when to reach out and how. You may be more appreciated by someone you sorta know rather than by a complete stranger who may get annoyed or be insulted, even if your feedback is well intentioned.

Whadya think?

Once I saw a very prime and proper lady post a message. In it she use a term that in another time was probably quite innocent. But in today's usage, it had a quite powerful sexual meaning. Of course, that was not her intent. I sent her an email message and within an hour, the phrase was re-worked.

I send private emails and sometimes even call if it is someone that I follow often.  I know I would appreciate it if someone did the same for me.

Jeff - For myself, I appreciate private emails or phone calls when I make mistakes.  I try to do the same.  It's all god as long as it's not in the comments.

I've had many a fellow AR member email me about typos. I always appreciate it. Spell check is an imperfect tool. "Tear" is a word. But if I meant "year" spellcheck doesn't catch it.

HI Jeff,

Once again you have created a classic must read post for all bloggers in AR to pin over their computer screen and remind themselves to help each other to help the community. thank you for pin pointing all the key elements to review, as well how we can help each other.

Peggy - Thank you! It IS what makes this a great community.

Margaret - that has been my experience, too. The titles are the worse because they are so glaring - big print, in the dashboard, etc.

Pamela - well I am not that consistent about spell check, and it won't catch the title. And spelling is just one of the issues. I know many who have helped others is various ways and I have tried to as well. Hopefully it carries over IRL.

Donna - I certainly understand. I don't mean to suggest that we watch out for every single error, etc.  It's not realistic and no doubt some people will take offense getting an email from a complete stranger telling them their post has problems. And there are more important and time consuming things to do. BUt IF we can be helpful and feel the other person will appreciate it, I'm all for it

Jeff - I have had issues with links, too, and was embarassed that I didn't even know it...and some were pretty darn important. I prefer people to let me know.

Charita - no doubt that's true, and we see that sort of behavior all the time. Some seem to enjoy criticizing others, putting them down, or other similar behaviors. Perhaps it's part of being competitive, or a need to show off?

Hi Jeff, Love this post. People tell me all the time, hey Vic, you got a typo or two. I usually catch em the folllowing day when I go back into the post with fresh eyes and of course, after people have already seen my handywork. Keeps me humble and I appreciate the heads up and never take offense. Thanks for sharing with us today!

Blogging, like breathing can not natural or be labored. Thinking about is the person reading this blog post going to gain something is key too. If it serves no purpose but blah blah hot air, it just clogs the information highway. Time on subject you know something about or questions about topics you don't make the blogging highway two way too. Great post!

Thanks to Rich for the reblog.

Watch out for fellow bloggers is a theme that runs through AR. Many times I have emailed a spelling oops and many other times I just pick up the phone. It happens to be another good way of connecting through social media. To my knowledge....I have never had anyone take it the wrong way.

I have had others point out mistakes in comments on my blogs...this is not the kindest thing to do.

Jeff,

This is great advice well stated!

Even those of us that know better can make mistakes!

Then their are those of us that just can't spell!

Please watch my back.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the great post. I really appreciate getting comments from fellow bloggers. It never seems to fail that after I've written a post and published it there's some sort of issue that still needs attention. This has a lot to do with the fact that I often write blogs in my word processing program which has Grammatik as well as spell check.

Grammatik kept bugging me about incorrect grammar issues, so instead of correcting the grammar, I just labelled it a "style" to keep it from annoying me again. And spell check works great but is unable to discern the instance where you might use "their" instead of "there".

Robert - well I'm not sure what you mean by MANY. I have faith in AR and think a good number WILL be part of this. I have had at least 2 dozen different people email me.

Dee Dee - well no one else...yet...has commented on the double meaning. I thought it intriguing. Thank you for your thoughts!

Bryan - good for you. I hope more people will take your approach!

Thanks, Bob. I would expect nothing different from you...and Lisa!
