MORE MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TEXAS WATER WOES ~ BE CAREFUL ON LAKE CONROE

Low Lake Levels Pose Boating Hazard

Due to the extreme drought in our area and most of our state, today Lake Conroe will be opening the dam to allow water to flow to Lake Houston to alleviate the shortages in Houston.  For those of us around Lake Conroe, this is not good news.  The already low lake levels will now drop even more creating some potentially dangerous situations.

Boaters and water skies should be very careful to watch for stumps or sand bars.  These once hidden hazards could potentially cause a very serious accident.  It would be very wise to really take a ride around the lake as the levels continue to drop and make note of the hazards that are now present.

Another concern are the low-lying stagnant areas of the lake.  These are excellent breeding ground for harmful bacteria.  It is advised to not swim in these areas and to stay in the areas where there is no evidence of stanation.

Taking some precautions now could potentially save a life!  Be vigilent and alert when on the lake and let's all pray for some rain very soon.

For more information about Lake Conroe and the water levels, vist the San Jacinto River Authority website.

Stay safe!

Paula,

Good for you for taking the time to write this post and point out the dam opening from Lake Conroe to Lake Houston.

I don't water ski, but depending on how much water is released there will most certainly be hazards that are exposed or worse, a hazard you hit when you take a fall.

I like your idea of taking the boat for a spin around the lake looking for potential hazards. It wouldn't hurt to anchor a buoy to the object to alert other boaters and water skiiers.

Thanks to you both.  It is so important to really be careful right now.  The people that I am most concerned about are the young people out on the lake.  Experience is worth a lot at this point with the water levels low.  We all just have to really hope that everyone will use extreme caution and be super careful.

I'm back... how the heck are you Paula? I am so glad to be back in the saddle so to speak. My daughter and S in L have decided to start a family which means a move to Texas might be in the cards. I cannot tell you how much your email encouraged me through a really tough time. I still want to call you and talk about our poor partner decisions LOL. Hope all is well with you....your friend Gettysburg Gerry

Thanks Gerry.  Yes, I would love to catch up with you.  Glad you are back as you have been missed around here.  Could you please send us some rain though?  It is desperate big time.  So hot we are frying our eggs out on the sidewalk.  Seriously, my son tried it out and it did fry the egg.  I will have him do it again and this time take pictures.  Yikey Yikes~

Paula this is a truly diverse country.  We had so much rain on Saturday that water seeped into my basement from the ground.  It was too saturated to absorb anymore.

With the lowering of the water level it would be great for fishermen.  I hope the drought doesn't last much longer

A very timely reminder, Paula! Most people associate boat wrecks with ocean waves and coastal beaches- but surely the danger can be just as great in our local lakes.
