Get Back in the Box and Think of Something New.

Am I the only person who has become tired of the phrase thinking outside the box?

Every time I hear someone say this phrase I want to let out a scream. It's becoming too bloody crowded outside of that box. Apparently all of us have fled the box and we are roaming around outside of the box. It's probably pretty warm and cosy inside the box.

It seems very strange to me that people who would like to express something original would use a hackneyed and overly familiar phrase to do so. In a lot of cases I suspect that people who do use this phrase are not capable of "thinking outside of the box", because if they were, they wouldn't be employing a worn-out cliche to express themselves.

I would be quite happy if I never have to hear or read this expression again. It's definitely time for a new term to describe this phenomenon. I would definitely be pleased if this term was banned from business meetings permanently, it has the same effect as nails on a chalkboard to me.

While we are at it, could we also stop using the word synergy, I'm not really sure what it means, but it also annoys me  greatly.

Malcolm...sometimes staying within the box is the way to go! I like the expression "think outside of the box" however, I have found that some of the simplest and oldest ways of doing something sometimes works best!!

"I listen for a living." It's all about you.

Malcolm I have been listening to a tape by Brian Tracey who, I believe is a Canadian.  The tape series is called The Psychology of Achievement.  My listings are spread out all over and so I spend a good bit of time in my car.  Anyway part of the series talks about how you can work on thinking about solving problems by clearing your mind and doing some deep breathing.  He explains that creative thinking comes from letting go of what you know to allow in what you are looking for.  I think this is how many people define thinking out of the box, when really all they are doing is thinking outside their own block heads. hehe

Hi Malcolm,

The holidays are often one of these few times during the year when people look for that traditons and staying in the box seemsto make sense to many..... But you are right, the rest of the year it people see to be so busy looking for this new way to do the same old things in supposedly new and creative ways .....

Malcom,

I agree with you completely. And, when you're ready, don't hesitate to write something about the expression "at the end of the day". It drives me nuts!

Malcolm - So what phrase would you say to replace "thinking outside the box" with?  How about "taking the path less travelled"...  oh no, that's been done!

KW, I agree, sometimes the best solutions are right there in the box.

Lol, Larry, I think you're right, it's more a matter of people trying to find a way of doing something which is new to them. I will have to look up this Brian Tracey fellow. He sounds enlightening.

Peter and Linda, "supposedly" new and creative is right. there is really very little new stuff out there, most things are variations of the same old methods.

Brian, yes, that phrase also bothers me a bit, but at the end of the day I only had time for this one rant.

Jo, thanks very much, I try.

Sally, I'll leave it to someone else to come up with a new phrase, I find it much easier just to tear things down rather than creatively try to find solutions.

Sir, you are on a roll. It must be those short days in Canada that leave you to ponder these topics.
