Shirt sleeve Weather Again in Nebraska! This Borders Somewhere between Crazy and Scary!

Central Nebraska is closing in on being the warmest on record.  Today's high of 55 and tomorrows projected high of 60 will seal the deal. What is going on?

In a nutshell...the jetstream...that high ridge of air that flows from west to east across the US has shifted farther north this year.   That shift occurred in very early December.

The one side of me is loving it!!  Late March weather in January.

The other side is remembering the old Farmer's warning...(my 85 year old Father in Law)...Warm, dry winters mean hot, dry summers.

I hope he is wrong there...but right now January has been way warmer than November or December were and I did not see anything to indicate February will be colder.

We have only had 3 days in January of 2012 that the high temp was below freezing...but we had 20 days that the high was over 40!  The average high for January here is 36.8.

Last year we barely got above 0 (zero) for 2 weeks... What a difference!!

Oh...did I mention that I am not complaining?

I think I read that Nebraska had either the biggest snowflake or piece of hail on record?

Snowflake was 14 inches & the hail ball was 7inches.

I just found the snowflake was 15 inches in Montana.

The HAIL WAS IN NEBRASKA--so watch out!

I think it was June, 2003??

The largest hailstone in the USA was 7 inches and was in your state.

Are you in south central Nebraska? Watch out for soccer ball size hail.

This weather has been interesting, last year we were all snowed in for weeks, now this January its been so warm that NYC Parks department cancelled our Winter Jam event because its too warm even to try making snow.  Hopefully it won't be a rainy spring.

Mike a lot of folks...most in fact, love the warmer weather.  I don't.  At least not in December and January.  I sure hope that this doesn't lead to a ridiculous summer heat wave or a summer drought.

Mike, that sounds like Spring weather, not Winter.

     Enjoy it while it lasts!

Monika...Yeah that large hailstone was in this neck of the woods.  We do get a lot of hail each year...I have been lucky for the past eight years so I better knock on wood!

Michele...I watch the morning shows that are in NYC and yeah it looks like you have had some warm weather and although I like it...

I am with Larry that I like the snow to fall in November, December and January... and not in March and April....

Fred...I will but only if it does cool down and snows at some point...

The other day it was colder at night in Florida than it was here.  That is not right!  I do not want the snowbirds back yet.
