Missing Insulation. It happens and costs you money.

During some recent Energy Audits I discovered several areas in a home that were missing insulation. It is common to discover that there is no insulation on the attic access but that 2x2 area was pretty minor to some of the larger areas I’ve found recently.

On occasion insulation can fall out of place or may have been removed during a renovation. There areMissing Insulation Hot also times where it was never installed in the first place. You may wonder how that happens, I wonder the same thing. Some of these areas are discovered during a visual inspection but there are areas not always visible. For these areas the Thermal Imaging Camera is able to detect these areas. Small areas of missing or improperly installed insulation add up.  Imagine the amount of energy that is lost from a large area of missing insulation.

The Energy Audit process is designed not only to save energy but to make a home more comfortable. A cold spot in the house can be a sign of missing insulation but there are so many other factors. An Energy Audit here in the Reno area can not only find issues that waste energy but also ones that make the house less comfortable to live in.Missing Insulation Cold

You have no idea how many times this happens, but here is a great PERSONAL experience for you.

We bought our first home in 1991 in Winter Park, FL.

We were in the home for 6 months and no matter how much A/C we spent, we could not get the home cool.

So we called the A/C installer and asked him to check for leaking ducts.

He goes in the attic and comes down laughing.  He says NOPE, nothing wrong with the A/c but there is NO INSULATION.

Now, keep in mind, we have 2 attic entrances and both have a sticker on them each signed off by a different city inspector as inspected for insulation compliance and depth to insure proper installation.

So we called the city and a supervisor is out in under an hour.

He looks at the labels and  calls the 2 building inspectors to the home and asks how this could possibly happen...

They say that they each assumed the other had crawled in the attic and verified, so they just signed off.

Well, I had never seen govt move so fast, but the next day we had an insulation company blowing so much insulation that it;s depths exceeded R40 levels.

Then the city was kind enough to reimburse us 2 months light bills.

Later someone said that was the biggest lawsuit they avoided so of course they bent over backwards to help correct.

Kevin, I have heard of this type of thing happening before here. The City Inspectors don't want to go into the attic or go under a house. Once they inspect a few houses thy trust the builder is doing it right. Of the two pictures in the post, one area is missing from a remodel and the other area has been like that since the house was built almost 30 years ago.
