On the shore of the Occoquan in Occoquan

Historic Occoquan sign

That is one sign you can believe as Occoquan is Historic - a tobacco warehouse was built there as early as 1736 and an industrial complex was under way by 1750.

Occoquan means "at the end of the water" in the Dogue Indian language. There are falls just north of the town, but then the river levels out on its' way to the Potomac River. It made canoe travel easy and there was a good supply of fish.

Historic Occoquan museum

The town grew rapidly with forges, rolling mills, bake house, warehouses and homes - all before the turn of the century.

The Merchant's Mill was the first automated grist mill in the country. It operated for 175 years until it was destroyed by fire, The miller's office survived and is now the Occoquan museum.

By 1804 the town was laid out with streets and lots. Prior to the Civil War Occoquan had a robust economy specializing in ship building, cotton and grist mills as well as river ice which was harvested in the winter, stored and shipped to Washington, DC.

At the beginning of the 20th century Occoquan had all the trappings of a growing community. However, a 1916 fire destroyed much of the town. When Route 1 opened shortly after it bypassed Occoquan as did the railroad. Then in 1972 Hurricane Agnes struck destroying sidewalks, streets and more buildings.
The determined citizens and merchants repaired and rebuilt the town. Today, Occoquan, population 850, attracts visitors to shops and restaurants in buildings as old as 200 years. It is both picturesque and unique - it has been ever since it was discovered by Captain John Smith in 1608..

Also, see Rockledge, a 1760 Occoquan mansion and the unique Occoquan Town Hall and the very "chic" Hammill Hotel.

Karen, thanks for this great history lesson on Occoquan!  I enjoyed the pictures as well, and the town has survived in spite of bypassed RR's, highways, and a hurricane!  Bravo, Occoquan!

You have my curiosity up-what is a tolling mill?

Bruce  I have no idea and can't find any reference on Google.  I read it in the town history and will try to do more resesarch, but none of the old timers are still around  :)

Bruce  It should have been rolling mill - they were hand operated until mid-18th century, but were water operated in Occoquan.  It was "new technology" for the period.  I corrected the post

Thanks Karen!  I didn't mean for you to go to all that work.  Rolling as in rolling iron or steel?

Without your incessant research, Karen, I was prepared to believe that a tolling mill was the first TOLL HOUSE cookie production works in the country!  That is what came to my mind!!!  Stretching that dough and flinging in the chocolate chips!!!  YUM.  Just a thought.   ^_~

Thanks again, Karen!  I always learn so much visiting your posts!

Bruce  It's easy for a little town to make a mistake, but it was only a typo.  Rolling mills go back to the 15th century for non-ferrous matals such as tin and copper.  Actually, I like your cookie referance much better.  BTW  It's also easy for big towns and cities to make big mistakes

Karen, seeing these photos of Occoquan brings back some good memories for me as I would go there on Saturday and Sunday, have lunch or dinner, walk around the shops and always had to buy something.  The last two items I purchased in Occoquan were two oil paintings that I still love....and the artist was from WV!

Rebecca  That is interesting to say the least.  It is virtually impossible to go to Occoquan and not buy something
