It’s a big week for school-age children this week - AIMS (Arizona Instrument to Measure Standard) Tests. The tests will measure reading, math, science and writing.
Goals of AIMS testing results:
- To help improve teaching, learning and to evaluate programs and schools.
- To generate data upon which educational policy decisions are made.
- It is a vital complement to innovation, higher standards, and educational excellence.
- To measure a student’s degree of competency in the Arizona Academic Standards for writing, reading, mathematics, and science.
- To guide the planning of curriculum and instruction within a classroom, school, and district.
- AIMS results are used in the state accountability system (AZ LEARNS) and in the federal accountability system (AYP) for the evaluation of school and district Performance.
Here’s how parents can help kids be ready for AIMS:
- The test days are long for students – make sure they get plenty of rest each night.
- Skip TV and video games before bed – instead, read or talk with your child and provide a quiet environment before bedtime.
- Eat healthy – especially for breakfast – skip the sugars and go for gains, fruits, etc.
- If your child wakes early with nervous energy – go for a walk, or site quietly and discuss their fears and nerves – giving them an outlet for their feelings.
Above all- provide positive confidence and encouragement for your child. Supporting your child is the best thing you can do.
