When technology gets an attitude . . .

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Cornerstone Business Group Inc 0225086119

I recently wrote a blog about my relationship with Apple's iPhone personal assistant, Siri.  Siri has become a crucial part of my business life, and I lean on her a lot.  There is, however, another female voice in my life that I'm thinking of divorcing.  Her name is Mandy.

No, Mandy is not my wife.  Mandy is my GPS voice.  She has a lovely British GPSaccent, and she says things like "take the motorway" rather than "highway" and at first, I found that amusing and cute.  But, as with all relationships, there is the opportunity for tension and conflict.  Mandy and I have that kind of on again off again relationship.

When I program in a destination I expect simple directions and direct route.  Mandy often seems to think I want to take the scenic route. Sometimes she seems to think I know where I'm going.  In that case, why would I use her?  More than once she had dropped me off at the end of a road that was never completed.  My destination is a mile on the other side of a forest.

She does seem to get a bit testy when I miss a turn.  I can hear her now,

  • Turn right in 500 feet.
  • Turn right in 250 feet.
  • Turn right in 100 feet.
  • Turn right in 50 feet.
  • Hhhhhh, turn around as soon as possible.
  • Now, turn left in 100 feet.
  • Turn left in 50 feet.
  • Turn left.
  • I said turn left.  Turn left, turn left!
  • What is wrong with you?
  • Don't you know your right from your left?
  • Fine. Find it on your own.

iPhone GPSMy GPS is a great part of my business life, but my iPhone "Maps" app is starting to give Mandy a run for her money.  I'm expecting Mandy to straighten up any time.  Or . . .

It's a good thing Mandy can't type. There are two sides to every story and we've only seen your side so far. Mandy deserves to have her story told!

Joy, there have been days that Mandy saved me from wandering around in the wilderness.  Then again, she put me out there a time or two.  8=)

Probably true, Joan.  I definitely have one.

I think I'd take Mandy over that guy.  At least her voice is soothing.  8-)

Melissa, my iPhone Maps App never gets me lost.  I think you're right.

Elyse, she doesn't know it, but I'm already using something else.  I do loan her out to friends from time to time.

Tatyana, there has to be an app for that.  8-)

Mike, I hate to do it, but I think it's time for Mandy to retire.

Mandy will do that too, Yalonda.  She also says, "Turn around when possible."  That means, "You screwed up!"  8-)

Iris, I keep hearing that you can change the language so I'm thinking about changing it to a foreign language to practice learning a language.

There you go, Pat.  I was just thinking of doing that.  Good idea.

I love the iPhone apps.  They have been 100% correct so far.

Sonja, I feel the same way.  I can't imagine dragging a 20lb book of listings around.  We're blessed.

There you go, Cheryl.  I'm thinking about doing that too.

Thanks, Natalie.  I'd like to be lost in paradise.  8-)

Yes we are, Praful.  I sure wouldn't want to go back to the old days.

Rosemary, I do keep her in the glove-box just in case.  I would probably miss that great accent.

Now that would be funny, Pete.  I wouldn't be able to drive from laughing.

Oh no, Norma.  That can't be good.

That's funny, Phil.

Conrad, does she have that squeaky high pitched voice?

Sad, but probably true, James.

It's that NASCAR gene in you, Wallace.

That is a good thing, Mark.  She would probably say I'm a goober who can't follow instructions.  8-)

Good Morning Mike, i have to say that when my GPS starts giving me conflicting advice, asking SIRI "directions to 123 main street in Manchester NH is easier to use than the GPS which I find my self screaming at.   Have a great Tuesday

I will never forget the time my co-pilot wife and my voice GPS disagreed on where to turn...my wife started to take it personal and I had to choose her over the other electronic woman to save the day...True story and good post at least for me and you

Yikes, Mike!  I'm so sorry that Mandy is being so difficult... ;)  Don't you just love when your GPS says "Make a U-turn in 100 feet... Make a U-turn in 50 feet... Make a U-turn NOW!"

Your post is funny! I have recently given up on my GPS in favor of my MapQuest app. (His name was Angus...a nice Scottish bloke but not too good with directions.)

Too funny, Richie.

Right, Jennifer.  That's code for "you screwed up."  8-)

Me too, Ron.  I totally expect her to be exasperated.

That is a great idea, isn't it, Ann.

It's all about the accent, Kathryn.  8-)

Rich, I'm with you.  I've never had it be off on any directions.

Well timed post about Siri. Sounds like the only thing "Mandy" can't do is reach through the phone and slap you around. In a good way, of course.

LOL!  Maybe Mandy needs a softward update!  Just like all women, they need to be "maintained".  Congrats on the Part 2 of this series.

I like Jennifer's comment above:)

As directionless as I am, a GPS of some sort is calling my name.  I just don't know about that British accent;)

Thanks, Jennifer.  I thought about taking her out more.  Maybe she is jealous of Siri.  8-)

Ouch!  That could be difficult, Jaime.  I hope you ignored it.

I was thinking about a nice southern accent, Jason.  I've always appreciated those.
