Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens... Maria, in the sound of music had a list of her favorite things. I am in agreement with some of them but others, meh. I have no idea what a schnitzel is. I have no quarrel with the noodle, as an American of Italian descent, I've eaten more than my share of noodles. Wild geese that fly are only something I can appreciate in the spring when they fly in. When I hear them honking overhead while flying south it can only mean one thing. Summer is coming to an end. Spring and summer are my seasons and autumn, while beautiful is always bittersweet to me. Winter and I have an understanding; I won't complain too much and winter won't last forever.
There's a tradition in this area, a longstanding one, that the first week in August brings The Goshen Country Fair. It's a fun time, a wonderful fundraiser for our volunteer firemen, full of all things carnival, and the signs went up last week. My son Max was the first to spot one and he groaned. Awww no. Then my husband came home and said "I was so sad today, I saw the Goshen Fair sign". I feel much the same way. I see the signs everywhere and we have had so much fun over the years, taking the boys there, and still go over by ourselves these days, but seeing the sign means that August is almost here. The long days of waking in the sunlight and swimming after dinner are more than half over. It's time to start thinking about school and closing the pool and the days getting shorter. God forbid, some people even start thinking about the holidays.
This post isn't sounding so thankful but I am thankful for the long days of summer, long in length but short in time span. The early morning sunlight, the flowers, the pool, walking the dog and seeing all of my neighbors, the boy's friends gathered around the table eating me out of house and home. Life is good all year but it's especially good in the summer.
Carpe Diem.
