Knob and Tube, Doom and Loom- Wenatchee and Leavenworth Home Inspection Services

It is very common in older homes up to about 1950 to find Knob and Tube wiring. Knob and Tube get its name from the porcelain Knobs (holders) and Tubes that run through framing members to protect the wires.

Knob-and-tube wiring systems starting going by the way side after the 1930’s due to the growing popularity of non-metallic and armored cable systems for homes.

As home inspectors we will find this style of wiring quite often when inspecting homes in the pre-1950 era.

Knob and Tube (K&T) had some advantages that modern wiring does not. It was an open air system and as such was able to dissipate heat much better.  Heat is the enemy of all electrical systems. This is why service conductors from power poles are often smaller than the service entrance conductors.

The problem with many of these older wiring systems is that they were never designed for our modern lifestyles.

Knob-and-tube wire, properly installed, is not inherently a problem. While opinions regarding the safety of knob-and-tube wiring vary widely, the concerns are not with the original wiring, but rather with what has happened to it after the fact.

Improper Knob and Tube Splices- Wenatchee Home Inspection

                                                         (These holders are the knobs)

When knob and tube are spliced or connected to junction boxes, fixtures or lights it must have what is called loom. Loom, special water resistant cotton braid tubing, is used to cover the wire. This provides the conductors protection when entering devices such as junction boxes etc…

                             Knob and Tube Loom

This is the same as cable covering in modern “Romex” style of wiring. The cable cover needs to enter the junction box to protect the wires.

Improper Knob and Tube splice and Loom- Wenatchee Home Inspection

When evaluating knob and tube wiring it is important to look for how any connections are performed and that the loom is in place. Circuits with K&T wiring should be on 15 amp circuit breakers only.

“A shocking occurrence ceases to be shocking when it occurs daily. “

One knob and tube for an overhead bedroom light, no problem. The microwave, big screen media center tv with all the bells and whistles... well, not so smart. Good post!

Sharon, Thank you very much.

Richard, it does have a higher chance. Use of AFCIs is well worth the investment in these older systems.

Dan, Removal is alway tough. It takes time so you may see abandoned wiring.

Mike, Thank you. Like many things in older home you have to evalaute it a little further. Time and actions by other are not always very friendly to these systems.

Lori, Thank you very much.

Andrew, this is very true.

Thank you spiderman ;)

Kevin, Like your inspector it is easy to do when you see so much. But we have to always remember that the buyer may have never lived in a home with it.

It's the stuff I can't see, like in the walls, that makes me wonder what consquences may be looming.

Jay, They can be very nice installation when done by an old time pro.

Jim, That is so true. On my own little projects I have found splices hidden in walls.

A wealth of information. I love old homes, but you do have to be aware of what they did better and what you should be aware of.

As an electrical contractor, I've seen thousands of feet of K & T in my lifetime, and the one thing I always tell people who are concerned about it is that it's perfectly safe as long as nothing damages it.  Unfortunately, it doesn't provide for grounding, which modern devices often require.  Also, those flying splices in your pictures are another reason it becomes unsafe.  Too many of those old runs have been messed with so many times they are no longer safe for most applications.   It shouldn't' be covered by insulation.  That's goes double for the old heavy insulation like your photos show.  It can longer adequately dissipate heat.  Best to replace it if possible or if practical.

Tanya, Thanks. I like older home also but they do need special attention.

Mike, Out here in Washington and Oregon (and in some other areas) you can insulate over K&T. You just need to have it inspected and repaired by licensed journeyman electrician prior to burial.

Check out his document for inspection prior to burial from Tacoma Power-

The old knob and tube is still out there and often provides power with no issues. But once it's messed with or overheated it can be a problem. I have seen some of the insulation as flexible as the day it was installed  but in other homes it's falling apart just looking at it.

Donald, knob and tube certainly wasn't designed for our lifestyles. I'm sure my blow dryer and hair straightener would blow every circuit in the housej ust by themselves! lol

Rob, I have found the same. I think each individual climate along with how it was used has an impact.

Sharon, This is very true. Also this is why all bathrooms should have homeruns

Mark, The big issue with it is that it has had years for many to mess with it, abuse it and try to use it for what it really was not intended for.
