What Do YOU Do all day........asks the Prospective Home Buyer

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with CELLing Realty CalBRE #01445865

Have you ever wondered what a Real Estate Agent does all day?  I mean you just drove past a house, saw the sign, called, and hey....no-one answered.  You got sent to voice mail.  Alright you just walk around the house a little and hope the Agent calls you back pretty quick.  I mean they do want to sell this house don't they?

OK, it's 9:33 am right now PST.....and I am wondering the same question.  I am a Real Estate Agent......and sometimes I can't even answer that question....but I am going to try and at least figure out what I have done with the last hour and 1/2.......

8 am- got a call to watch a special on NBC about Foreclosures....made coffee.

8:10-8:30 - checked emails, answered emails......and drank coffee...........

8:30-9:00-showered and dressed for day........went to my Blog, started new Post

9:00- 9:30....one prospective client called about his property....a 5 acre parcel up in the hills with no comps, and no like properties......we discussed me giving it to another Broker that is more familiar with properties in the Mountains Of Joshua Tree.......

And now I am shutting the computer off (it is 9:48 am)......going to fill up my car, check on a few houses I have listed.....go to the Printer....send a fax....and do whatever the day has until 1 o'clock when I have an appointment.......

One thing about Real Estate.....Sometimes even I wonder what I did all day :) :)

Kathy, what a great post. Sometimes it does feel like a lot of busy work.  At least you're not sitting around and eating bonbons all day - LOL!!

Tom- Amen my friend.....The days and weeks are just flying by........

Kate-You mean there was an option to just sit and eat "bonbons?"  Seriously, yes, a lot of what we do is busy work, and preparing for a sale.....with fliers, networking, tours, open houses.....whatever.  And phone calls, we get a lot of those, and that can take time to give people the attention they need and deserve, and we cannot forget the Internet.....that too takes time......

I guess that the bonbons are optional.  Sure would be fun though - wouldn't it - that is if you like bonbons!

Kathy, I think agents during their "normal" working hours should return calls between their business. There's no normal excuse not to return a call within half a day, I think. I don't get it either.

Love your new photo!

Hi Gary.....I can think of reasons not to return a call within half a day.  I wrote a Post awhile ago about not being able to answer the phone in certain areas where I have work....and during my 3 hour ride to my office.  the Mountains and Desert around me don't get cell service, so no matter how I may want to return a call, I can't..........

That being said....if I was just shopping, and it was a work day, then I should return my calls.

My days start at 7am, with phone calls and problem solving.  My appointments start at 10am, with problem solving in between.  My time with the computer is always in the evenings, with AR reserved as the dessert (thus my late blogs...)

My latest issue is not what time I start work, but what time does work really end.  Do I need to feel guilty that I decided to answer one of my seller's phone calls at 8:30 pm when everyone is quiet, only to then have one of my small children need me passionately and loudly?  Should I feel guilty that I answered the phone at home or should I let it go because they are calling ME at 8:30pm?

Kathy,  I have to track the time so that I can send reports to my virtual assistance clients letting them know how much time I spend on a project, etc.  This forces me to keep tabs on how I spend my day. Now, the weekends are a completely different matter.

Mirela-Our days start at about the same time....however the AR time is different....I haven't given myself a certain time, although mornings, and evenings are usually when I come log on.  I like what you said.....AR is your "dessert" , yes I like that....

Sherry-Ahhh the parenting dilemma.  Well the way I would say this is anyone that is calling you AFTER 5  PM should expect that you have a life.  And if your child needed you then just say....."oh I'm sorry Mrs. Jones, my little one needs me right now, may I call you back?"  And I wouldn't feel guilty...

Jackie- You make a good point.  Some people in our field have to tract  their time.....Week-ends, I had no idea that we could have these off :)

Debbie- I know what you mean....when my day was over today I just kept wondering why I didn't get more done?  Sometimes I work more at night because I want to have accomplished more than I did :)
