How to properly dispose of FOG..fats, oils and grease
As more people will be cooking and baking for Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's, it's helpful to let people know How to properly dispose of FOG..fats, oils and grease. Fats,m oils and grease do not easily "melt" with hot water as people often believe.
The best solution is to let the grease cool down, can it, seal it and chuck it in the garbage. (Remember how your parents would keep an old coffee can on the stove for grease? Now you know what it was for.)
Here’s some useful information about how to propertly dispose of FOG..Fats, Oils and Grease and how they can cause some real nasty issues for today's homeowners and municipal wastewater collection and treatment systems.
FOG is not water soluble. It separates from the water in sewer systems and clings to pipe walls. This causes blockages and overflows, and affect your home’s plumbing and the city sewer system.
FOG is the leading cause of sewer backups and overflows. A backup into a home is a serious health hazard and can cause thousands of dollars in damage. Overflows that reach fresh water and river systems are harmful to fish and wildlife.
The easiest way to prevent FOG related sewer problems is to never dispose of grease, or greasy or fatty foods by putting it down the drain.
Using your garbage disposal or rinsing greasy pots with hot or soapy water is NOT the solution either.
The landfill is the very best place to dispose of FOG...not the sewer system. Here are three easy to remember tips.
1. Scape leftover foods into the trash
2. Wipe greasy pots and pans with a paper towel before washing
3. For leftover cooking grease you should always...
Cool It- Let the grease cool down
Can it- Seal the grease in a can
Chuck it- Into a trash can bound for a landfil
Never put FOG down the drain! Cool it, Can it and Chuck it.
