New Trier High School, Winnetka, IL
Annual Report 2012
As a real estate agent who works in the all the villages served by New Trier High School, I know what a draw it is. Whether buyers are moving from downtown Chicago or out-of-state, many already know what high school district they want to live in. They don't often care if they buy a home in Glencoe, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Wilmette, Northfield, or even east Glenview, as long as the public schools feed into New Trier.
Such is the power of the school's reputation that home prices and rents are slightly higher within its district. Homeowners understand that a good portion of property taxes go to the schools - and New Trier has only requested a tax referendum for additional monies twice in the last 35 years. Currently, the school states that it can continue to balance its budget without a referendum for its five years projection. While pensions make some future funding uncertain, New Trier believes its strong financial management will protect taxpayers into the future.
New Trier High School offers a strong academic curriculum that is diverse and incredibly broad. In its 2012 Annual Report, New Trier reports that there were 30 National Merit Scholarships and 34 finalists, one Presidential Scholar Semifinalist, one National Achievement Finalist, one National Hispanic Scholar, and 412 Illinois State Scholars. The average ACT Composite score is 27.7 (versus the state average of 20.6.) This score is the highest in Illinois for a non-magnet public school.
