Speechless Sunday in Los Angeles with Ron & Alexandra

We have been researching good dim sum places in the vicinity of Santa Barbara.  Our first experience was at a Japanese restaurant in Goleta (15mns North of us).  It was good not great.  Then we did two stints in Los Angeles Chinatown, and one in the San Gabriel Valley, which again could not meet or even come near the standards we got accustomed to at San Francisco's Yank Sing.  As a matter of fact, we were disappointed.

We just had to find decent dim sum and we did, BAO, is located in the perfect neighborhood in Los Angeles.  The raves were amazing!  We left this morning at 9:00, and arrived there at 10:15...about the same time it used to take us to get to San Francisco from Napa...When you are an unbashed foodie, the drive is irrelevant, providing the food is good.

We had to wait a while, as we were 15 minutes early, so we walked around the neighborhood, where we had leased and sold commercial properties.  Accross the street is the building of the  Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (first photo), and how fun to have it reflected in Bao's window.

Happy to report that even the signature item of Yank Sing (juicy dumplings pictured above) was excellent here as was everything else we ordered.  The shrimp was fresh in the various dumplings as were the vegetables. We were in dim sum heaven. The dish pictured below is stuffed shrimp with eggplant.

We had a long chat with the manager and asked him if he felt the quality of dim sum in Chinatown and Monterrey Park had gone down.  He said that the competition is so fierce in these areas, that restaurants are lowering the prices and that takes a toll on the quality of the ingredients...

There were quite a few Chinese people in the restaurant, and they were as happy as we were. We are looking forward to our next jaunt to Bao, and we will probably combine it with a vist to Disney Hall and  hear the Los Angeles Philarmonic orchestra, or see a play.

Happy Sunday, Cheers, Ron & Alexandra

Such a nice story and photos Ron and Alexandra. I love Dim Sum. You'd think in the San Fran area it all would be the best since it so well known for its China town?

The Dim Sim in Chicago China town is great. Old men playing boards games all day, all kinds of treats I have never heard of.

Fine piece you did today.

Hi Ron & Alexandra - Yank Sing is one of the reasons we always go back to San Francisco. We've searched all over Denver and haven't found anything remotely close to their excellence - I'm glad you found a good alternative to the long drive north.

I love these neighborhood adventures and discoveries... even when they don't meet expectations! Yet, you found and I enjoyed virtually those sumptuous dumplings at the Bao with locals and visitors. And I am totally all over combining the eve with the Los Angeles Philarmonic orchestra with Gustavo Dudamel, and I remain a huge fan of the awesome legacy of wonderful directors and musical performances from the LA Phil... so so so want to do that some day!
