Living Winter Part Time

Coming from the North, I am familiar with how winter works there ... which is why I am in Georgia while I write this post!

In the North, everyone knows to bury water lines four feet deep to prevent freezing. We know to drain water hoses during winter. We know to insulate, drip water, wear layers, and the rest of the drill. We winterize every year.

In the South, there are some winters with no hard freeze. We just have some rain and "raw weather", which makes an excellant environment for growing bugs to eat plants and bite. That's the downside.

Folks can get lazy about preparing for cold weather, or maybe a better word is complacent. They forget about their pets, tender vegetation, pipes, hoses, sprinkler systems, furnace filters, and all the other items that need attention.

Make sure you bring pets inside, or at least provide adequate shelter. Pets up North are used to it, ours are not accustom to the differences, and like us have "thinner blood".

One of the most common problems is water pipes located on exterior walls. It's not so much a problem in the North, but down here many homes are not well insulated, especially older ones. If you have heat, leave the cabinet doors open. If not, let the water drip.

There are many other suggestions available on the subject, but mainly, don't get caught snoozing!
