Hey Modesto are you looking for a place to take a hike, or a walk, or a ride, or a ...
If you are then I have the perfect place for you to do all of that and more. Dry Creek Trail in Modesto is the spot. Dry Creek Trail runs along side Dry Creek (duh) for approximately 5 miles. Going east to west the trail starts just east of Claus Road and runs to Kewin park near downtown Modesto.
There is a paved trail the entire length of the Dry Creek Trail. There are also several dirt trails along the creek for the more adventurous mountain bikers. I ride my bike the entire length of the trail quite frequently but I stick to the paved trail. There are also several access points along the trail.
About midway on the trail is East La Loma Park. There is a large parking lot, play ground, restrooms, picnic area, tennis courts, basketball courts and a Frisbee Golf Course here. This part of the trail and the park can be accessed from Edgebrook Dr just south of the Trail.
A bit farther west is another access point from Scenic Dr at Coffee Rd. There is a parking lot just off of Scenic with a trail and bridge crossing over Dry Creek and connecting to the main trail. There is also another Frisbee Golf Course on this part of the trail.
The east end of the trail starts at the Claus Rd bridge over Dry Creek near Johansen High School on the Eastern edge of Modesto. This part of the trail runs right along the edge of the creek for about a mile. This end of the trail has lots of old oak trees along the creek. The trail then runs alongside Creekside Golf Course for about a half mile. So far I have not been hit by any errant golf balls. There is also another access point to the trail at the golf course.
The trail is also a great habitat for lots of wild life. There are squirrels every where. Dry Creek Trail is also home to many different birds. It's not unusual to see a hawk flying overhead (probably attracted by all the squirels). Earlier in the year it wasn't unusual to see ducks on the creek. On one occassion I even crossed paths with a skunk. Luckily he (or she) wasn't very interested in me and it went on it's merry way.
Dry Creek Trail in Modesto is a great place to take a hike. It's also a great place for joggers, biker riders, walkers, skate boarders, scooter riders and dog walkers. The Frisbee Golf Courses are very popular as there is always someone playing when I ride by. I have ridden the trail at all times of the day from early in the morning to just before sunset and there are always people out and about on the trail. Dry Creek Trail is great for people of all ages. Most of the trail is pretty flat and you can enter from serveral different points and walk, run or ride as little or as much of the trail as you want. If you want to get out and get a bit of exercise and some fresh air head on over to the Dry Creek Trail in Modesto!
