Our Multiple Listing Service, Matrix, covers a small portion of the nation. Just for fun, I looked up the sales volume over the past 30 days.
Within Matrix, 12,978 houses have sold over the past 30 days, adding up to a total sales volume of $5,104,779,619. That works out to an average sold price of $393,341 per house.
That's a lot of houses, and a lot of monetary velocity through the economy. Velocity is a measure of the flow of cash economists track through the economy.
So curiosity lead me to wonder how many homes have sold within the Matrix network over the past 365 days. 130,010 homes have sold within Matrix within the past year. The total sales volume over the past year within Matrix was $47,691,470,872. That's a lot of cash flow through the economy. That works out to an average sold price of $368,906 per house.
According to the National Association of REALTORS, NAR, roughly 5 million houses sold across the fruited plains in 2014. 2014 was not a boom year, nor was it a slack year; It was a moderate year, with a healthy balance of homes for sale and homes sold.
Real estate feeds our economy far beyond the purchase and sale of houses.
Home sales generate sales of:
Shades, blinds, curtain rods, curtains.
Kitchen appliances.
Kitchen cabinets.
Counter tops.
Laundry appliances.
Floor tile.
Carpet.
Hardwood floor.
Paint and wallpaper.
Landscape stock.
Shovels, picks, wheelbarrows, garden hoses, sprinklers, irrigation systems.
