Searcy AR old picture wagon store

Buggy Searcy AR old picture same store

Here are two more pictures from old Searcy AR.  They were loaned to me by Cargile Auctions to share with readers of this blog and come from the Shoffner Estate Sale that will be coming up in March.  Look at the background.  What store in Searcy was that?  Anyone remember?  It looks as if the pictures were both taken in front of the same store.  Note the windows and door.  I'm betting some Sleuth will remember which store it was.

Barely readable on the back of the wagon with barrels is this, "George Shoffner & Mr. _____________."  I can't make out the last name.

Thanks for sharing great pictures of Searcy's history.

Could that be Smith-Vaughn when it was located on Arch Street, southwest of the Court House?

Barbara, that's a tough one since all of the early brick buildings looked similar.

The photos are probably before 1910 when the street paving began.

See this blog for another building near The Searcy bank. This could very well be the same building. From the 1919 map here is the ID of the buildings.

Don, I think you are right.  It looks like the building in that picture.  This estate has SO many pictures that are probably made in old Searcy.  There are also more of the ones from the Collins photograpy that we blogged about a few weeks ago.   Thanks!!

Harold Gene, they are great pictures aren't they?  The ones with the lumber yard are said to have been where the jail used to be.....

George Shoffner was a first cousin of Clarence Shoffner (Phil's father). George's nickname was "Doc" and he was born around 1890. To me he looks like a teenager in this picture, so I would guess the picture was made around 1905-10. Either Clarence's father Jim Shoffner, or the Uncle Augustus "Gus" Shoffner ran a store on Market Street, I think it was in the block west of Spring Street. I am wondering it it may be the Shoffner store in the background of the wagons. Doc Shoffner later worked as a conductor on either the M&NA or the DK&S.

Bill, thanks for that information.  You are a great historian for the city of Searcy.  Be sure to check the blog that Don Thompson mentions for a view of the store that we think this is.  Call me if you are interested in the Shoffner history in detail.
