It is extremely important for all people to insure their home will keep them healthy. In today’s environment there are many culprits that may cause problems with your health. Some of those culprits that cause health problems may be located right in your home. Many people are not aware of the hazards in their immediate surroundings. Following is a list of some of the offenders:
Dirty carpet – Tracking dirt, animal waste on carpets and using rugs in damp areas will create health hazards. Vacuuming will help the situation providing you use the right type of vacuum system.
Open trash cans and standing water – Beware of any type of container or pool that can collect water and does not drain immediately. This is a breeding ground for mosquitos and other insects which can make you sick.
Predators - Do not leave food items in the backyard for your dog or cat. This will attract critters such as rats, mice, and coyotes, etc.
Dust mites – Best way to avoid this infestation is to keep the house cool and avoid high humidity, clean frequently, and wash your bedding frequently.
Gases - Be sure to have a working carbon monoxide monitor in the home. Also be aware of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide in the home. These can be prevented by using exhaust fans over your stove, cleaning your chimney and furnace each year.
Water quality – Frequently check water quality for your area by either calling Drinking Water Hotline at (800)248-4791, or visit the following web site: www.epa.gov/safewater/dwhealth.html.
Lead and radon – These issues are found mostly in older homes. There is an easy test that can be run to check for both. Both of these may cause either illness or even death.
Mold – This is the result of moisture leaks found in walls, and in the attic, etc. The cause may be due to rain entering the home, leaking water pipe and/or from the air conditioner. Mold growth from mention sources can cause respiratory issues, asthma, allergies, coughing and headaches.
