ActiveRain membership changes regularly, mostly because people come and go on their own. Either they get out of real estate, or they go solely to their own site to blog, or they decide blogging just doesn't work for them. And in those cases, they typically leave their past work here in the Rain.
But once in a great while a participating member has to leave on other than his or her own terms. I've only seen it happen a handful of times in my years here. And each time I know it's a decision that was NOT taken lightly by the AR Staff. This community is about growth and not subtraction. And ejection has only taken place after attempts by the Staff to address the behavior of the member. ActiveRain operates as well as it does because of the Community Guidelines.
Inherent to those guidelines is the intent that we create an environment that is welcoming to sharing, building our business and gaining friends. What's NOT part of those guidelines is continued insults, trashing other Rainers and otherwise creating a feeling that your negatives far outweigh your positives. There is no problem with stating your opinions CIVILLY (although even then, there's a time and a place), but the HOW of it can make or break your reputation.
Obviously different people have different levels of tolerance and frankly none of us are totally immune to on occasion offending someone else. I take my Ambassador role seriously, but can I claim total innocence from being human and sometimes hitting ENTER on a comment when it might have been better to just move on? Of course not.
Personally I struggle with the concept of "just ignore them and they'll go away". I tend more towards believing "silence is consent" and allowing rude behavior to go unchecked sets a bad example for our community. What we have here is pretty special, and if I want a Lord of The Flies environment I can just head over to Facebook and type the words "Trump, Hillary or Bernie??" and I'm sure the poop will begin to fly within minutes. So on rare occasions, ignore isn't an option and the AR Staff will feel that for the good of the entire community, a member may need to be ejected.
What we can do is trust that if the AR Staff has decided to show a member the door, it wasn't a rash decision. It's happened AFTER they've provided an opportunity for that member to conform. And if after that point a member chooses to continue to violate the community standards, then any consequences that follow are of their own doing.
Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help!
