If you are thinking about buying a home here, you should know that Southern California, like many parts of the county, is pretty health conscious.
But perhaps because it is warmer here most of the year and more of our bodies are showing, the focus is, perhaps, more extreme. Our beautiful weather throughout the year allows folks to enjoy the outdoors and stay in shape surfing, riding bikers, hiking, walking, skate boarding, roller blading, golfing and more.
Since we have lots of fresh produce year-round, it is pretty easy to eat well and at a reasonable price, which helps to stay in shape (BTW did you know that San Diego County is the nation’s number 1 producer of organic food?).
Carlsbad has a good number of health clubs of varying sorts to help folks look their best too (we have seen a substantial increase in health facilities in recent years as the fitness and wellness industries have continued to expand). Here’s a sampling of some places you might want to check out if your shape is not quite what you’d like it to be (and you are not in to cosmetic surgery and liposuction, which are pretty popular here in Southern Cali too!).
PureFitness – Located near the intersection of Palomar Airport Road and El Camino Real in an office park, PureFitness offers a great deal to the health conscious. Amenities including plenty of weight machines, racquetball courts, basketball court, aerobics room, spin class, men’s and women’s lockers (you can choose either executive or classic memberships; WIFI in the locker rooms), indoor and outdoor heated pools, tanning facility, Jacuzzi, plenty of cardio machines (treadmills, elliptical equipment and stair machines), and much more. Interested in yoga classes? Or Pilates, gravity classes, or boxing? Got that too. Check out their website for more information.
24 Hour Fitness – located off Palomar Airport Road a few minutes west of El Camino Real (entrance is off Aviara Parkway; 1265 Laurel Tree Lane). Less expensive than PureFitness, and no backetball court, 24 Hour Fitness offers a lot. The expected weight machines and free weights are in abundance, and you can choose from lots of cardio equipment (recumbent and traditional upright bikes, ellipticals, treadmills, stair machines). The locker rooms are well-outfitter, and there is a pool, Jacuzzi and sauna.
Agility Studio – a specialty facility focusing on yoga, Pilates and cardio fitness for anyone regardless of age or fitness level, including those who have injuries or health concerns. At 576 Carlsbad Village Drive in the Village.
For women, you can choose from 30 for Life in Carlsbad Village (not far from the agility Studio, at 2801 Roosevelt Street), with a variety of fitness and cardio equipment, Elite Fitness Spas for Women (e.g., cycling, yoga, massage, tanning) and Curves (a chain of facilities nationwide focusing on circuit training – 2 facilities, at 7724 El Camino Real and 5670 El Camino Real).
For really competitive athletes, Velocity Sports Performance may be your thing (6070 Avenida Encinas). Here the focus is on customized training programs emphasizing speed, power and agility performance.
And of course there is the YMCA at 6100 Avenida Encinitas).
Here’s a longer list of clubs in Carlsbad.
