Aside from the obvious, waking up beside my stunningly beautiful Bride, I'm talking about the first flower in our yard for 2016 (aside from dandelions).

PoppyI did not plant any flowers at all this year but I have planted poppies in the past and they are very good at volunteering to poppy 2016

come back again and again. This one had perfect timing. Having raised poppies for many years I can tell you whether it is the variety with a full head like this one or the kind with 4 to 6 petals they do not withstand wind very well. I have seen flowers like this bloom and loose all there beauty within an hour in a strong wind. Today is calm, the last two days we had consistent winds in the 20 mph range with gusts over 40 mph.

Timing is everything, even for flowers displaying their beauty.

Hi Bob "RealMan" Timm - where I live we can usually start planting around beginning of February.  But we have to keep our fingers crossed that there is no more freezes or snow. I usually just cover the flowers at night.  Your post reminds me of a pot I left alone and a whole bunch of flowers just sprouted up!  I didn't expect that. The first flowers of the season are always very special.

WOW Sheri Sperry - MCNE  it sounds like a magic flower pot.

Good morning Bob. It is always a joy to see a flower bloom you didn't just put in the ground.

It really is a pleasant surprise Sheila Anderson . There were a lot more volunteers but regretfully I had to till many under to plant the rest of the garden.

OK Bobby Bob "RealMan" Timm One more reason to come to San Diego. I have had flowers for months already.

I'm not sure but I think that is a chrysanthemum. They are very good about coming back year after year.

Man, I don't know. I'm just looking at the flower.

Maybe Roy Kelley can clear this up for us.

I'm pretty sure it's a poppy but I've been wrong before Bill Roberts . Do chrysanthemum seeds look like poppy seeds?

Bob and Bill Roberts that is definitely a champage bubble poppy.  I could tell from the unopened bud.  They are beautiful and I had lots of them in my Los Angeles garden.  They are a perennial, which is why they came back, however, mine never did...Nice post, Bob.  A

Your poppies look considerably different than mine.  Your's are so fluffy looking. Mine have about 5 petals each, and not that vivid pink color.  I want your's!

Jun 21, 2016 06:33 AM
Bob "RealMan" Timm

I usually have those as well Myrl Jeffcoat right now all my seeds are mixed up so if I send some seeds out who knows what they will be.

Thank you Olga Simoncelli . I started growing poppies a long time ago and I still really enjoy them. You have to capture they beauty quick as they seldom last more than a day.
