I've worn a lot of hats in my life, but the one I wear today is definitely a favorite. I never intended on being a Realtor, or a broker. I've often thought fate chooses our path, and this is definitely one that was chosen for me.
My real estate adventures, prior to becoming a licensed agent, were fun, exciting and amazing. My exploits garnered a lot of attention which led to questions and advice, traveling and teaching investing seminars, holding classes in my home town and mentoring first-time investors. I also never intended on doing those things, but I love to share my passions, and investing has been one of those things I couldn't keep bottled up.
My mother-in-law encouraged me to join her brokerage during my investor years. On numerous occasions, she would reach out to me to help her create a deal for her challenged clients. We did some pretty creative stuff in those days, and thankfully, we never lost a negotiation. That spurred her to keep after me to join her brokerage. Finally, I took a sabbatical from my job, joined her firm and six months later, she retired.
A few short years after I received my license, the economy crashed. Being the entrepreneurial type, I figured that was the perfect time to get my brokers license. If everyone is running for the exits, somebody had to leave dessert on the table, and they did. I became an REO broker and things went great. As the economy regained stability, I moved on to standard sales, and I continue there today.
I never intended to bring other agents on to my little island brokerage, but somehow, they kept showing up on my doorstep. Today, I have 12 agents and I am still happy doing what I do. Actually, I'm thankful for what I do. It gives me financial freedom, control of my destiny and a sense of doing something good for others. Thankfulness is doing what you love.
