A treasure?  Yes, Searcy Art Gallery is not just an art gallery that displays art.  It is really a historic treasure.  It is called The Black House, named for the Black family who built and lived there for so long.  Yesterday, June 29, 2019, the house was dressed up for company like it would have been done in the past.

A beautifully dressed table with special prepared foods is shown partially in the photo above.  A reception was held to feature "Small Works on Paper " touring exhibit and was held from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.  Everything was lovely with fresh flowers all over the house.  Debbie Higgs, shown above in the photo, worked hard to get all things just right.

If you missed it, don't despair.  Plan to visit 300 E Race sometime soon.  You will experience how things "used to be."  Antiques everywhere!  Placed in rooms that show us history,  beautiful art work,  a gift shop, and if you like gardening, you must tour the grounds.  Howard Johnson, shown above, is President and Debbie Higgs is Director of the gallery and house.

I was impressed!  You will be impressed also!

The Black house was once owned by the Rogers family. It was restored and placed on the historic register in the early 1980's. 1982-83 maybe? Elmer Dale Yancey and Tom Quattlebaum had a company that did the work (River Oaks Builders) and then housed their offices there. If you look at the fireplace mantle upstairs you will see hand painted wood grain done by an "artist", using a feather, who was hired to duplicate it's original appearance and meet the regsister's specifications. I worked with the crew that did the restoration and watched him do it. There was once a carriage house behind the home that was demolished during the restoration to make room for the parking lot.

Hello former Searcian,

I remember Elmer Dale and Tom Q restoring the old house.  I was already in real estate at that time and working across the street with Powell Realty.  I was very proud of their doing that.  There is still some sort of building behind it.  It must be a horse stable and I don't remember a carriage house.  Next time I visit I will go to the upstairs mantle and see the art work.  Thanks for your contribution to this blog.
