I represent taxpayers in the greater Saint Louis area as well through out the State of MIssouri who have unfiled tax returns and unresolved tax issues. The latest message that was broadcasted over social media was please respond to our notices before we begin enforcement action.
This was a reminder that they are in full collection mode as of 6/15 as evidenced by generating balance due letters after 2020 returns were processed and accessed. This is a friendly reminder that the IRS would like to be paid.
The collection effort begins to intensify if there is no contact with the IRS. Taxpayers with balances due from 2020 as well as 2019 will be notified that they have 30 days to respond or pay there tax bills. If commuication is non existant then other letters will be forthcoming which begin the process of potential liens and levies of bank accounts, wages, commisions and other assets that a taxpayer might have.
Here is a brief rundown of what these letters look like.
Notice CP14:
: Our records show you filed your 20xx form 1040 with an amount owed. If payment in full in not made by a certain time penalties may apply to your account . Penalties can be as big as 50% or more of the tax due.
Notice CP 501: Reminder of Balance Due. You have 10 days to respond. This is the begining of enforcement whether a lien being placed or potential levy action.
Notice CP 503: Another Reminder of Balance Due. What's happened? Could be several things. A return was filed and balance owed or perhaps the IRS prepared a return on your behalf with a balance due.
Notice 504B: Notice of intend to levy: You have 10 calender days to respond. You are notified of your rights as a tax payer if the IRS is getting ready to file a lien or levy.
For the first time in quite a while the IRS is really getting serious about narrowing the tax gap.
If you or any one else you know has unfiled tax returns and balances due to the IRS or your state department of revenue please don't hesitage to contact me @steveshapiroea@ gmail.com or calle @636-397-2759 or text me @ 636-866-4554.
