Déjà vu in Southwest Louisiana?

By
Real Estate Agent with CENTURY 21 Mike D. Bono & Co.'s

Déjà vu  (pronunciation;French)"already seen";  is the experience of feeling sure that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously (an individual feels as though an event has already happened or has happened in the near past).  This is the definition provided by Dictionary.com.  This is exactly my emotions as I take a moment to write this post today.   I am calling my clients in Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana with vacant properties to remind them to prepare for what could be a rough few days and trying to prepare to vacate the area if needed.  We are told that most residents will be more cautious and not wait as long to leave this time.  This is wonderful news.

Two years ago, when we returned after Rita, I created a page on my website that has become a little dusty, thank goodness.   This page, however, has a lot of information and especially links that will assist you in a time when you need to prepare for an emergency of any nature.  Please visit the site and take from it any helpful information that will make life more comfortable and safe for you and your family.

I would also like to point out that there is a link to Southwest Louisiana Contra Flow Maps.  The maps will hopefully, should they be needed, prevent confusion as to traffic flow at a time when the stress level will be at maximum.

Please forgive the brevity of this post.  I am trying to complete my many task so I can concentrate on preparing for the safety of my family and personal home as well.  I did want to bring my http://Awareness.derenda.com  out of the shadows in hopes that is would be of service to someone.

Rita and Katrina taught Louisiana residents many lessons.  Our State will not be caught unprepared.  We will work through this, if it comes our way, and move forward with the enthusiasm of before.  I am so very proud of the people of Southwest Louisiana, the progress we are making, and the future I see for our communities.  Storms are detours not barricades.  Stay safe and see you when the rainbow is visible.

Derenda,

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you down there.  I was down there after Katrina and helped with the clean-up and evacuation afterwards.  I hope that does not happen again.  I also wanted to thank you for stopping by our blog.

Ellie,

Thank you for your contact.  I was up early this morning to watch the briefing from our local officials.  It is not often that you will hear a citizen say they are Blessed in the local officials that have been elected to office and the way they work together, but we have an awesome team down here.  They truly are PREPARED and keep us PREPARED.  It is hard work that they stay on top of year round.  Thank you for thinking of us.

Joshua and Kathy,

I enjoyed your Blog.  Since we may have a enforced work "slow down" again, maybe I will have time for another visit.  Thank you for your assistance after Katrina and your Prayers are always welcomed.  We are very concerned for our friends in Texas and we are on what is known as the "dirty side" of the storm.  That means we will have significant damage without a direct hit.  We are bracing ourselves either way.  This is a wonderful place to live and like every where else, it has to have a glitch here and there.

Derenda,

We're praying for God's grace on those still near the gulf coast.  My sister in law and her husband live southeast of Houston, and haven't left for safer ground.

Greg,

This was truly a rough one.  We stayed because we were not expected to be in harms way.  I purchased flood insurance two years ago against my insurance agents advice.  He said I DID NOT NEED IT.  Everyone said I did not need it.  I purchased it any way.  If I had not stayed, I would not have been there to move our antiques to higher ground when the entire first floor took on 4 inches of water this time.  The wind destruction in our area was not that much, just the water was horrible.  Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.  We need them.

Mike,

I do hope you have heard from your Sister in law and her husband by now.  I know they had wind and water where as we had mostly water to contend with.  Lots of water.  We have many homes flooded out.  I will be gutting and remodeling the entire first floor of my home and it has never taken in the first drop of water.  It was in what was considered to be in a the "X" or once in 500 year flood zone.  Thank goodness I had taken out the flood insurance any way to be sure.

Hello Derenda:  I can't believe that with all these happening around you, you went and comment on my little blog for such inconsequential thing!  Thanks!

I am so glad that you are doing fine in the scheme of things, and that you have flood insurance.  I am the same way - when we moved to CA 10 years ago, I told my husband I refuse to buy a house unless we get earthquake insurance sitting in between two huge faults.  Knock on Wood that we never have to use that, but I can't see without one.

The Preparedness page is great.  We need that in CA also.

Hi Sylvia,

I am not able to spend as much time as I need to on my business, but AR is a form of escape for me late at night before I try to sleep.  It is as though I try to visit with friends whose world is in a more orderly form than mine at this time.

I am very blessed with all of the assistance of a wonderful contractor that has already torn almost everything out that needs to come out down to the studs.  The plumbing and remaining of the hardwood flooring comes out tomorrow and the next day the spray everything to make sure that mold could not possibly survive. Then we start to rebuild.  That is when it becomes exciting.  Now it is a little depressing.  You can see from one end of my home to the other.  My Pug loves it.  She cuts THROUGH the walls now instead of going around.  She is going to hate it when they put them back up.

I would think you could adapt the preparedness page to suit your needs in CA.  Take a look at doing that.  I would be very happy for you to use our idea to help others.  Good Luck.

I hope that is going to be helpfull.  I have heard such mixed reviews about how just the compensation is when they come to the homes.  We meet with the adjuster tomorrow and I am a nervous wreck as I wait in my demolished home knowing this one individual has such terrible power over my life.  I will be glad when tomorrow is over.

Derenda, I can't imagine what it must be like.....what an eye opener for those of us living in the southwest - suffering only from the heat and monsoons. ;-)

Hi Teri,

Every area has its flaws, and this seems to be ours for now.  Today was a true eye opener.  It seems if I were poor, people would rush in and rebuild for me at no cost.  Since I go to work each day, pay high taxes for FEMA to exist so they can sell me Flood insurance they are going to sell me insurance with more holes in it than a sieve.   It was very depressing.  They thought I should replace only the bottom kitchen cabinets.  It did not matter that the top cabinets did not match the bottom cabinets.  They were functional, so they worked.  I need sleep and hopefully tomorrow will be better.  I have dreaded today for too long.

Derenda,  I missed this post.  Hope you're feeling better by now.  My brother told me they weren't very helpful to him either (he had 6" of water in his home).  The first adjuster told him to just relocate.  How do you do that?  Just leave the damaged home and move into another one -- just like that???  Arrrrgggghhhhh

Well, they didn't susgest that I move.  They said they would have answers for us on Friday or Monday at the latest.  Monday has passed and no word as to how much we will get to put our home back together again.  Everyones tells us, not enouch!

Derenda, my brother's house flooded during Rita too -- he's in Cameron Parish (Grand Lake) -- so I guess I can see why they tell him to relocate.  I keep telling him to move back to Lake Charles too -- of course, that's easier said than done.  He had just finished with some of the last repairs after Rita.  He did all of the work himself to save money and it took awhile.  Now, he has to do it over again.

He needs to find a lot to purchase.  We'll talk about it later...

Good Morning Amber,

It is a BEAUTIFUL morning in Louisiana.  Crisp and lovely.  Yes, life is getting back in line.  My home was flooded, but all of the debris is out, we have the FEMA check (which we highly disagree, but at least we now know where to start our fight) and they start replacing walls on Monday.  My world looks better this Saturday morning than it has since before the storm.  Our little ducks are lining up nicely.  Thank you for stopping in to respond.
