Fossil Fest will take place November 8th and 9th and this will be the 18th year for it to occur. The creator of this festival is the Paleontological Society of Austin. They are a scientific, non-profit, community-based organization devoted to the study of fossils. Their goals are to advance the state of this science by educating the public, and collecting and identifying fossil specimens. This festival is popular with both fossil experts and amateurs alike. There will be various demonstrations, games and fossil exhibits. Do you think you have a fossil treasure collecting dust at home? Bring it to have the experts on hand identify it for you!  You will be amazed by how old some of these fossil are. If you need more details you may go to www.TexasPaleo.com for more information.

Fossil Fest Location:

Old Settler's Association Headquarters
Highway 79, Round Rock, TX
(3 miles east of IH-35, next to Dell Diamond)

Hey, Betina. If you ever get to Los Angeles, let me know and I'll drive up there and take you to the La Brea Tar Pits. My visit there back in 1979 got me interested in fossils and such. I need to go again. They continue to find things each year; a most interesting "dig."

Russell,

I would love to do that. I have heard of the LaBrea Tar Pits, but never seen them. If I get back to California I will definitely give you a call!

In the Austin area we have some dinosaur footprints, bones and loads of aquatic fossils. I have a fossilized seashell that a UT professor said was probably 3 million years old. Which frankly freaked me out, but I guard it with my life! I love this kind of stuff and have several friends that are archaeologists.
