I Gotta P...

The P on the hill by Palomar College in San Marcos

It's a landmark of sorts. A human-made one. And it can be seen for many miles - I can see it from South Carlsbad State Beach in fact, probably 7 miles away.

I see it often when driving around for business and when driving by the other day finally stopped to take a couple of photos (I was in good shoes so no hiking up the hill for a close look).

The P on the hill by Palomar College in San Marcos

P on the Merriam Mountains in San Marcos

The P is on Palomar Hill in the Merriam Mountains in San Marcos, across the street and to the rear of Palomar College, a 2-year community college servicing 30,000 part-time and full-time students. The college was founded in the 1940s, and 7 enterprising graduating students created the project on a 1/2 acre of ground on the mountain. Stop by and see it sometime if you are in the area.

You can read more here. A little bit of local San Marcos trivia.

You know, when I was a kid I lived in California.  We lived up by Lake Arrowhead.  Seems I remember some of those on the sides of the Mts now that I see this?  So interesting, wonder why they do this?  I guess if you live there you don't really pay much attention to it after awhile.

Jeff - we had M -LOL. I have to go snap a photo of it. I just call it the M mountain - it's in Golden CO on the foothills. When my son was younger he thought it was cool since his name is Matthew :) ~Rita

Cool. So what's it made of? I guess it can't be sand or it would have washed away a long time ago. I guess white gravel would stay put for a while, but someone would still have to maintain it... or is there someone maintaining it?

Great title.  I've never noticed that P before.  I'll pay more attention next time I'm down in your neck of the woods.

Very clever!  I honestly don't remember the "P".  I wonder if it was there when I was at UCSD?  I love your colorful localism posts!

Jeff, I love this area. I've played at a golf course in San Marcos, and been in Carlsbad and surrounding area many times. Beautiful areas. ;-)
