fort belvoir: A Sign of The Times-A Change At The "Wives" Club At Fort Belvoir - 06/14/11 08:29 AM
For years military installations across the US have offered the fellowship for the "wives" of active duty and retired military though the "wives" club.  However today's military spouses aren't always "wives".  At Fort Belvoir there has been a name change to reflect the new status of the dependents of those eligible to participate in the Officers Wives Club.  The new club name is the Officer Spouses Club.  Though the club membership has been available to men for many years the name did not reflect the open door policy.  Now it is official and the board members hope the name change will … (6 comments)

Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Fairfax County is a 2200 acre established as a habitat for bald eagles in 1969.  During the spring and summer bird watchers by the thousands come and spend time looking for eagles, blue herons and over 200 species of birds. In the winter time it is a great place to walk and enjoy solitude.  The shoreline looks out across the Potomac River and Belmont Bay. The refuge is located just a few miles from Lorton and Fort Belvoir. When I took this photo I started humming the Mama's and Papa's song "On A Winters Day"

fort belvoir: Kingstowne and Fort Belvoir-The Good Neighbor Policy - 10/31/09 07:28 AM
We don’t always get to decide who are neighbors are going to be. We take our chances when we see new houses going up around us. Deciding to put out the welcome mat often helps pull your new neighbors in and makes them feel welcome. And this is case with Fort Belvoir and Kingstowne. When the earth movers first arrived on a large expansive of dirt between Van Dorn and Beulah roads everyone waited with anticipation to see how the newest neighborhood would grow. And grow it has. Into a community divided into three villages made up of commercial and residential … (4 comments)

fort belvoir: Fort Belvoir Relocation-New One Stop In-Processing Center Coming - 10/20/09 06:54 AM

Anyone who has gone through the process of in-processing at a military installation knows it can be complicated.  At Fort Belvoir it means 24 stops at the various required departments located throughout the installation.Starting in 2010 anyone arriving (or departing) from Fort Belvoir will be able to head to one location on post and find all of the departments they need under one roof.   With the influx of BRAC personnel, cutting down on traffic on post is one reason for moving all the in-processing to one location. The new offices will be located on the North Post next to the Bowling Alley between Gunston … (4 comments)

fort belvoir: Fort Belvoir-Three Year Reprieve on Some BRAC Moves - 09/23/09 09:41 AM
With the construction crews frantically working it appears that some agencies slated for the big BRAC move in 2011 have been given an opportunity for a three year extension.  The Department of Defense has announced that agencies in leased office space may extend those leases until 2014.  The benefit is two fold.  First in a time when commercial real estate is feeling the pinch of a down market the owners of buildings in Crystal City and Alexandria will have more time to find new tenants.  With the concern over the timeline and completion of buildings and road infrastructure also looming it gives … (0 comments)

fort belvoir: Military Relocation-Should You Buy a Home on Your Next Tour? - 06/10/09 01:57 PM
Over the last few years many military families making the move to Fort Belvoir, the Pentagon or any of the installations within the Military District of Washington made the decision to purchase a home when their orders arrived.  With quick appreciation and fast sales it made the choice easy.  Now with prices lower and the market slow trying to make the choice between buying and renting is harder. For many using their VA home loan benefits in this market makes sense.  As the only 100% loan program available for military families they can ease the costs associated with buying a new home.  … (6 comments)
