st louis: Search for Steve Fossett Continues... - 07/20/08 01:17 AM
Remember Steve Fossett?  He is the adventurer who went missing during a solo flight last September.  He attended Washington University in St. Louis, and we have been following him for years.
Well, in February of this year, they pronounced him dead, but his body has never been found.  They recently started searching for him again, hoping to find him somewhere in the western Nevada mountains.
Unfortunately, he hasn't been found.  For his family's sake, I hope he is found someday soon.

st louis: Cell Phone Ban in Missouri? - 07/19/08 01:36 AM
I don't know if anyone has heard about the tragic accident that took place in St. Louis, MO on I-64/Hwy 40 recently.  A trucker wasn't paying attention and crashed into some cars.
Well, 3 people have died, and several people were injured.  It has been mentioned that a cell phone may have contributed to the man's inattention.
This event has prompted a Missouri representative to re-introduce House Bill 317, which would ban cell phone use on highways.  Hands-free use of cell phones would still be allowed.
Have other states adopted this ban?  Have they had any effect?

st louis: Remember the chess clubs when you were a kid? - 07/16/08 02:22 AM
Well, St. Louis is trying to bring chess back to kids and adults alike.  The Chess Club and Scholastic Center is scheduled to open tomorrow for chess players of all ages!
I think this is a great idea.  I have never joined a chess club, but I have always enjoyed playing and think that this game is worthwhile.  It really makes you think, strategize and plan ahead.
The cost will be $30/year for full-time students, $80/year for adults, and $120/year for families - very reasonable.st

st louis: John McCain at Ted Drewes in St. Louis - 07/16/08 02:04 AM
Last night, John McCain was in St. Louis for a fundraiser.  He reportedly raised $1.6 million.  Later in the evening, he stopped off at a St. Louis favorite hot spot - Ted Drewes' Custard.  Ted Drewes is famous for its custard concretes.
Of all the many different flavors to choose from, which flavor did John McCain choose....?   Chocolate.  Yes, you heard right....    Chocolate.     I would've recommended the double chocolate brownie banana fudge...but that's just me...  :)

st louis: Are the St. Louis Rams For Sale? - 07/15/08 01:53 AM
I was listening to the news this morning.  Someone brought up the question:  "Are the Rams for sale?"  According to Rams' president John Shaw the answer is "no".  They are not actively looking to sell the Rams or move them.  Someone presented an offer to purchase the team, but they were turned down.
The Rams have been in St. Louis for 13 seasons.  I, for one, like them here.  I think many St. Louisans feel the same way...

st louis: Anheuser-Busch InBev in St. Louis, MO - 07/14/08 01:46 AM
Well, it's official.  InBev bought Anheuser-Busch for 52 billion dollars.  This is an increase from the earlier offer of 50 billion dollars and translates into $70 per share.  The new name is "Anheuser-Busch InBev".
Of course, St. Louisans are anxious to see how this will affect their jobs.  InBev is known for drastically cutting costs...
The long saga is finally over.  The outcome is what most expected - It's all about the money...

st louis: Anhueser-Busch in St. Louis and InBev making a deal? - 07/11/08 06:55 AM
Well, it looks like InBev raised its offer by $5 a share to purchase Anheuser-Busch.  That would make the offer $70 a share - or 50 billion dollars.  Word has it that Anheuser-Busch will accept the deal sometime this weekend.  This would be a "friendly" deal as opposed to the "hostile takeover" mentioned earlier in this saga.
What about the new name for the company?  It hasn't been decided yet...

st louis: Buying Foreclosures in Flooded Areas - 07/10/08 02:20 AM
If you are considering buying a foreclosure, there are some things to consider besides the price.  Is the foreclosure in a flooded area?  What about an area with heavy rainfall?
Usually, foreclosed homes have their power shut off.  Not only does that mean that the lights will not work, the sump pump (assuming the home has one) will not be working either.
When water gets into the basement of a home, mold can begin to flourish.  In the St. Louis area, one business is getting 20 to 25 mold calls a day.
Please be careful when buying foreclosed property (or any … (8 comments)

st louis: InBev takeover? - 07/08/08 10:19 AM
I heard on the news that Anheuser-Busch is suing InBev for an illegal takeover bid.
InBev was asking shareholders to vote on removing the Anheuser-Busch board of directors.
Anheuser-Busch didn't like that idea, so they are suing.  They are calling it an "illegal plan and scheme," which "through a course of deceptive conduct" seeks to acquire control of Anheuser-Busch at a "bargain price".
I think InBev is finding this takeover to be a little harder than they thought...

st louis: What's Happening with the Anheuser-Busch Buyout? - 07/01/08 05:08 AM
InBev's CEO Carlos Brito asks shareholders to override the Anheuser-Busch board.  He wants them to approve the buyout.
He thinks that Anheuser-Busch's present plan is too risky.  He asks shareholders to look at InBev's previous track record of international expansion and profitablilty even during bad economic times.
I'm not sure if that's going to convince them, especially since it their track record usually involves cutting jobs.

st louis: Breaking news in Fenton, MO (near St. Louis) - 06/30/08 09:27 AM
It looks like the Chrysler Plant is going to cut costs.  They will be laying off a total of 2400 workers.
1500 of the layed-off workers will be from the St. Louis South plant (Fenton).  This plant is to actually be closed indefinitely.  900 will be from the St. Louis North plant.  This plant will reduce its shifts from 2 to 1.
Not news St. Louisans wanted to hear...

st louis: Pope Benedict XVI moves Archbishop Raymond Burke - 06/29/08 12:59 AM
Friday, June 20th 2008, Archbishop Raymond Burke was appointed to head the Vatican's supreme court.  Burke has only been in St. Louis for 4 1/2 years, but has made a name for himself as being controversial.
Some St. Louisan's are glad to see him go.  Others wish he could stay, but are happy for his new position.
Burke will be leaving some time in August, but a replacement could take up to nine months.

st louis: Fair St. Louis moved due to flood waters... - 06/28/08 03:23 AM
Due to the flooding of the Mississippi and the high waters around the St. Louis Arch, I didn't think St. Louis was celebrating the 4th of July this year.  However, it has just been moved.
This year, Fair St. Louis will be held in the Soldier's Memorial area of downtown St. Louis.
So, if you were planning on coming to celebrate the 4th of July with us, and then decided not to because of the flooding, come anyway because the celebration continues...!  :)

st louis: The Flood of '93 compared to the Flood of '08! - 06/25/08 05:25 AM
Have you been wondering how the flood of '93 compares to this year's flooding?  I have, so I did a little research.
In 1993, hundreds of levees failed along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.  So far, 31 levees have been breached between southern Iowa and St. Louis and more are threatened.
In 1993, more than 50 people were killed.  This year, the death toll is up to at least 24.
This year, flood waters on the Mississippi are not expected to rise over 40 feet in St. Louis.  That's almost 10 feet lower than in 1993.
1993's flood was from May through September.  … (8 comments)

st louis: Lunch with Warren Buffett? - 06/23/08 02:38 AM
I heard on the news this morning that Warren Buffett is auctioning off a luncheon date with him.  People from St. Louis might want to take advantage of this to ask him about the InBev takeover of Anheuser-Busch.
Bids are starting at $25,000.  I believe you can invite 70 of your friends to go with you and have a nice meal with Warren Buffett at some restaurant in New York.  You can ask him advice on investing and moneymaking.  Last time Buffett did this, the highest bid was $650,100!
I think his first words of advice would be to not spend … (8 comments)

st louis: Budweiser Buyout? - 06/12/08 02:28 AM
The big news in the St. Louis, MO area is that Anheuser-Busch (the nation's biggest brewery and based in St. Louis) received a $46 bilion buyout offer from a Belgian brewer name InBev.
InBev is known for it's aggressive cost-cutting, so the St. Louisans are not too excited about this.  They are afraid that many people will lose their jobs.
This is not a "for sure" thing, so we will just have to wait and see what happens...  :)

st louis: Obama in St. Louis, Missouri... - 06/09/08 12:02 PM
I heard on the news today that Barack Obama will be in St. Louis at the Renaissance hotel this evening for a fund raiser.  I believe it is by invitation only.
The tickets range from $500 to $2300!  Even if I supported Obama, I wouldn't be able to afford that!  Well, I wasn't invited anyway...  :)

st louis: Cards Fans Love Rick Ankiel! - 06/02/08 03:35 AM
Last night, spectators watched Rick Ankiel make another spectacular play.  The Cardinals played the Pirates in St. Louis, and in the 2nd inning, Ankiel leapt to make what appeared to be an impossible catch!
Ankiel started out as a pitcher a few years ago.  He showed some promise but had some "wild" episodes.  Since he's changed positions, he's played some pretty amazing baseball.
I think Ankiel has found his niche...  :)

st louis: It's Official! :) - 06/01/08 02:32 PM
I saw on the news this evening that this May is the wettest month EVER in the St. Louis, MO area.   Our normal rain total for the month of May is 4.11 inches.
This May we had 10.89 inches!
So far this year, we've had 29.57 inches of rain!  Unbelievable!  I knew I was getting soggy...!  :)
How much rain have you been getting?

st louis: Another deluge! - 05/26/08 03:11 AM

I just can't believe all this rain we are getting!  My rain gauge showed that we got 4 1/2 inches of rain yesterday!
I live in Wentzville, MO.  We are just a little west of St. Louis.  Wentzville now has a May total of more than 8.87 inches of rain...and more is on it's way!
My brother-in-law is talking about building an ark...It may not be a bad idea... :)
