What are the top 4 reasons for the stock market rollercoaster?
This post by Bryan Robertson of Los Altos, CA hit the nail on the head.  Not only is our stock market dictated by fear, but many of the actions in our society are dictated by fear.  Unfortunately, the real fear that people SHOULD be reacting to is fear that they won't have enough money invested or put away for retirement.  The media doesn't find that fear sexy enough to drill into our heads, but it's a real one.
