Take Special Care of Your Plumbing Pipes to Prevent Freezing

We have had temperatures below freezing for several days now with nights dipping and wind chills into the low single digits. Our advice to tenants and homeowners is to keep their faucets running at a slow trickle to keep the pipes open and flowing. 

We also recommend keeping thermostats turned up and not closing off any rooms in a home. Opening vanity or cabinet doors under the sinks can help get warmer air to pipes and help prevent freezing pipes. 

Water pipes on exterior walls should be insulated during the building process but with severe cold and winds, even these can freeze if preventative measures are not taken.

A further precaution is to run supplemental heating in areas where plumbing pipes may not get the normal amount of heat like storerooms, utility rooms or add-on baths. 

Remember when leaving faucets running to take extra care to make sure the stoppers/plugs are open fully so sinks and tubs will not fill up and overflow.
