I recently met with a bankruptcy attorney who is interested in partnering with me. Our meeting was probably the most informative meeting I have had with any single person in awhile. What made the meeting so informative was how the attorney described the process to me and gave me a general makeup of his client base. To my amazement, the way the bankruptcy laws were restructured to make it harder for people to declare bankruptcy has had the opposite effect. He went on to say that he opened his firm several years ago and hired several attorneys specializing in several areas of law. He catered to various clienteles with various socio-economic backgrounds and locations. Regardless of who they were, or what they had, or where they came from, bankruptcy was becoming a prevalent topic.
The attorney's bankruptcy cases were becoming the mainstay of his practice and because of the sheer nature of bankruptcies he no longer had time to handle any other types of cases. His decision to handle only bankruptcies quickly became a gold mine for him. During our meeting the phones was ringing non-stop because with the current housing market conditions, loss of jobs and increasing number of insurance companies not covering certain procedures or illnesses, there is a record number of bankruptcy filings. He said divorce is the number one reason to file, second only to loss of jobs and illness. A person who can't manage their money and filed was at the lower quadrant of the equation. When I asked him what percentage of people file to take advantage of the system he informed me he did not know because he did not take on those cases.
I asked him if filing bankruptcy changed people's lives for the better. He inequitably said "yes"! This very kind and compassionate man stressed that while filing bankruptcy still holds an unfavorable stigma is today's society, it is also a process which can save lives and families, can cantilever one to a fresh start and new beginning.
My virtual assistance company is approached often to partner with companies related to all aspects of the housing market. A week doesn't go by that one of my agent clients don't relay a sad story about desperate clients who can't sell their homes and/or lost their jobs; how this desperation forced divorces and illnesses. Whenever I hear such a story, the silver lining is that by partnering with these companies I have recourses with the names of people and companies that can hopefully help.
