Page, AZ makes the Top Ten List of Outdoor Life's Best Places To Live - 03/24/08 12:09 PM
Page, Arizona placed in the top ten of Outdoor Life's April 2008 cover story, "Best Places to Live - Top 200 Towns For Hunters & Anglers" Page placed as one of the lists "Supertowns" Outdoor Life has 5 million readers and was started in the late 1800's. So, how did Page make this list? Simple - it's an awesome place!! According to the article ~ “Once a gritty company town whose fortunes were tied to dam construction and power production, Page has diversified into a tourist Mecca. Good food, interesting stores and stunning viewsheds,” "Homes are expensive here, but this is one of the

How To Add Cities In Localism - 03/23/08 02:44 PM
Yup - I live in a very remote place - Kane County, Utah. There are three cities (towns, villages) which are not on localism but are in my farm area. It would be great to get them added. I can see how to add neighborhoods, but alas, these are individual communities and residents would be displeased to see themselves as a neighborhood of Big Water. I poked around a bit today, maybe I am just not seeing where to add them. Any help will be most appreciated! Cheers!

Lake Powell Pipeline - Hold on to your hats! - 03/22/08 01:15 AM
Update - I wrote a more indepth blog on my website this morning after having received several emails. There are links to the main participants as well. Real Estate and The Lake Powell Pipeline Part 1 ********************************** What will it mean for the housing industry if the proposed 120 mile pipeline to carry water from Lake Powell to Saint George, Utah gets built? I asked myself this today as I was driving around Big Water, looking at Lake Powell and decided to stop in at our town hall. Posted on the desk was a notice of an upcoming meeting on the pipeline. Yes, posted on

Sedona - there is just not much that needs to be said - 03/19/08 01:43 AM
I spent the past Friday to Monday night in Sedona attending the Best School Of Real Estate (that is for another blog) As I was driving to school to attend the Contract Writing BOOT Camp - well, this photo opportunity just jumped out at me. On Sunday the snow had fallen for much of the day, with hail, thunder and lightening around noon. I took this photo the following day as the storm clouds were building and a light snow was beginning to fall. This is an HDR photo and toward the bottom of the photo you can see several white dots -

Lake Powell Colorado River Flood Update - 03/18/08 10:01 PM
On Friday the good news started hitting the papers. It was a SUCCESS!! For background on the March 2008 flood please see FLOOD BACKGROUND The general thought is that this flood is all about the endangered fishies. It is, no doubt, but in my book it is also about the sustainable habitat downstream that has been created by the dam, as well as us wee humans enjoyment of the resource. Before I get to the news, it is somewhat fascinating that the Salt Lake Tribune's lead story on the flood was "Dam Test Revives Beaches, Gulps $4 million in electricty" while the Arizona Daily

Big Water's New Speed Limit - a Hit - 03/12/08 08:06 PM
No pun intended. Driving though Big Water has changed notably in the last few months. The new 55 mile per hour signs up are a welcome relief to many people on both sides of the Utah/Arizona border. This is a story with a long history of local residents and elected officials attempting to have the speed limit reduced through Big Water. It is an idea whose time has come. In April of last year, a local resident and business owner, Mike Miller, was injured and his car totaled while attempting to turn left off Highway 89. Thankfully, Mike survived but sustained

Colorado River Spring Runoff and Lake Powell Part 1 - 03/10/08 01:54 AM
Seven of the last eight years the water flowing into Lake Powell from the Colorado River, and upper basin tributaries, has been in the state of drought. 2002 saw only 25% of average inflow in to the lake. Average is such a misleading word when used in describing events in the desert. Not much average happens here. This year looks like, while not the end of the drought, to at least be a good water year. As of March 2, 2008 snowpack conditions above Lake Powell are at 124% of normal. Lake Powell is a huge water storage tank. After

New FHA/HUD Loan Limits Announced ! - 03/07/08 01:30 PM
Last week, President Bush signed into law a $152 billion economic stimulus bill that includes temporary increases in loan limits for the government sponsored enterprises ie. Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and FHA until December 31. In order to help sort all of this out Realtor.Org has put up a page explaining the new loan limits and breaking them down by each county in the country. http://www.realtor.org/gapublic.nsf/pages/economic_stimulus The chart for each county can be found here: http://www.realtor.org/GAPublic.nsf/files/chart_hud_loan_limits_08.pdf/$FILE/chart_hud_loan_limits_08.pdf From the National Association of Realtors: "NAR expects the impact on the housing market to be significant because of the infusion of capital into the

Lake Powell Water Release ~ Photos - 03/06/08 11:43 PM
Please see the blog here Lake Powell Water Releasefor background on flood. I was going to add the photos to the previous blog, but after being there for several hours today, decided they needed their own space! The jet tubes are releasing 300,000 gallons of water a second. Yup, a second. The first one is from a Glen Canyon Dam downstream viewpoint called "The Whitehouse" by the locals. Getting there is half the fun ~ it's a wee bit of a walk down steep rock steps, but beautiful. The image is HDR. This picture was taken behind the Carl Hayden Visitors Center at

Lake Powell Water Release ~ Wow! - 03/06/08 02:25 AM
Once again the world wide media has descended on Page, Arizona, and Glen Canyon Dam to watch and record a spectacular release of water and witness environmental history. Starting yesterday and running until March 10, 2008, a high flow water release from Glen Canyon Dam is rushing down Glen Canyon and into the Grand Canyon. This test is identical to the one performed in November of 2004. The idea behind releasing greater than normal quantities of water, quickly, is to stir up the sediment in the Colorado River beyond Glen Canyon Dam, float the sediment in the water for a short

Night Skys In Big Water Utah are hard to beat - 03/02/08 03:24 AM
Astronomy was never one of my strong suits. We had a telescope many years ago but sold it. Recently my son has gotten seriously interested in astronomy, and some of the pictures he is getting using a realtively inexpensive telescope and his Canon XTI are pretty astounding. Technology has certainly changed the accessibility to do things like this. One of the great things about living in Big Water is the lack of light pollution. The stars really shine here. Some of the photos he is taking are using exposures of up to 4 minutes. A laptop, a webcam, a small motor
