marketing: Selling the Sizzle NOT the Steak! - 02/15/09 10:33 PM
So I was writing a post over at Marketing Artfully about small businesses that sell the steak and not the sizzle and I started thinking about real estate steak/sizzle combos. Basically this phrase is a jazzy way to say that you are selling the features of the product rather than the benefits.
Now I KNOW what you are going to say because I say it all the time, stupid Fair Housing Act messes you up on this one! As a real estate professional, I can't say that a huge house is great for families even though it is ludicrous to think that a single … (14 comments)

marketing: How To Brand Yourself Online - 12/10/08 10:33 PM
In your marketplace I am sure that you have a look! Your signs are all branded with your logo or your shamrock or your picture. Your flyers also have your logo and hopefully any advertising you do looks like the rest!
BUT then you get online. Your broker website doesn't allow for much customization so you pick something that does match your offline look. You don't know how to format a square picture so you upload some kind of logo to include on diffent websites OR you don't know how to upload a photo at all so you skip that step.

marketing: Marketing Tip - Bad Blog Post Titles, Do as I say not as I do! - 12/09/08 10:31 PM
So I wrote a totally fun post today about "How Tos - But EVERYBODY Knows How To Do X!" over on my Thrive Blog. It is all about how you should share your knowledge to lead generate and how you can utilize your expertise to help humanity!
There are tons of things in there that I could have used as a title that would have attracted the internet to index my post so that humans could find it! I could have named it "How Tos - Lead generate using your expert knowledge" or "How to gain market share using what you … (9 comments)

marketing: How To Succeed At Blogging - Say Whatever You Want - 09/06/08 12:38 PM
So I was reading a post today about a realtor who was thrilled that she felt comfortable expressing her faith on her blog - I am super happy for her! I have read MANY MANY posts beautifully written by agents with children, which I have enjoyed (even though I am a dog owner and rather childless myself)! I frequently take classes taught on subjects which I am not totally interested in, but which are taught by speaker I enjoy because they are so passionate!
When you are blogging, pick a topic that you are passionate about. Don't try to be something … (19 comments)

marketing: Top 5 Ways To Increase Your Active Rain Experience - 08/30/08 02:52 AM
So I was writing a post today on my marketing blog about how to increase your website traffic for free and I mentioned using Active Rain to drive traffic, which got me thinking about AR, the fun stuff that I have done and seen over here and thought I would share!
DISCLAIMER - I am not an active rain power seller. I do not have a gagillion points nor is that my goal. I like hanging out and reading what other realtors are writing and seeing the great marketing tips this community generates. These are just my own observations and not … (23 comments)

marketing: The Good Of The Few - A Marketing Dissertation - 08/29/08 01:04 AM
So I have a confession to make before I start - my friends hate me because I start sentances with things like "so I was re-reading crossing the chasm today (a 1995 book on technology marketing) and got really into how to define my customers, should I use B2B or B2C". If you still want to read this, go ahead. If you go ahead, do not make mean comments about how boring I am!
So how does Star Trek apply to your real estate business? In Star Trek, the good of the many outweighs the good of the few. This is … (4 comments)

marketing: How to make a pretty post! - 06/24/08 01:13 PM
I have a confession, I am the world's worst blogger! I do not make pretty posts - I write long paragraphs that sometimes have no point. I write about stupid things sometimes because I can. (You can see the problems here at my site www.MarketingArtfully.com - BUT if you are just going to criticize me for being inane, move along now and read a "real" blogger!)
Now that we have have that out of the way, let's get to how to make a pretty post!
Instead of writing long boring paragraphs with LOTS of different thoughts, try to have a sort of … (14 comments)

marketing: Active Rain - Jimmy McCall Is Brilliant! - 05/25/08 10:23 AM
So I got an email from Jimmy McCall - Clarksville's Mortgage Consultant, he had written a post on how to increase my points. He pointed out that you can get even more points for making sure that you have maximized your Profile, Testimonials and Accrediations.
Using his tips I went from 936 profile points to 1775! I am maxed out in almost every category!
While it is nice to get more points, I realized that Active Rain knows what they are doing here! I had to email some customers to beef up my testimonials (I know I ALWAYS read the testimonials … (1 comments)

marketing: Active Rain, Realtors Time and Payoff - 05/23/08 11:21 PM
Day Four - Down to business! I am teaching a class in marketing on blogs and websites this week to realtors in our market center as part of an all day technology seminar and I was looking for something new to tell them that we had not tried before.
My overall impression of Active Rain prior to this was that it would be frustrating to blog on a platform where you are competing with other agents directly and that there were established agents already in any local areas that our agents would be entering.
What I HAD seen previously that WAS intriguing … (6 comments)
