fairmount: Tip Jar: Meet Your Nightmare Neighbor - 07/26/12 01:14 AM
This week, we strongly advise you to meet your nightmare neighbor.

Meet your neighbor, Eastern State Penitentiary, in the Fairmount section of the Art Museum. This historic attraction/museum is a frequented spot for tourists and local Philadelphians. Being an admitted glutton for the macabre, my tour proved to be a very stimulating experience. If you are a history buff, this place provides plenty of it and apparently Eastern State Penitentiary is believed to be haunted by the very prisoners that once walked the halls and sat in the prison cells you will see in my V-blog.  Visit Eastern State Penitentiary...if you dare, of … (1 comments)

fairmount: Get Hands-on Help with Older Homes - 09/20/10 02:07 AM
We blog about modern construction all of the time, but what if you're an aspiring owner of an historic home? These homes may require a bit more attention than a new or updated home. The Preservation Alliance of Philadelphia is holding a series of workshops with hands-on demonstrations and visuals on how to restore and maintain older properties. All workshops will be held at the Coral Street Arts House in East Kensington.
In addition to the workshops, there will be lectures in Fairmount for further insight on historic home buying and owning.
All Fairmount workshops start at 6:30pm.

fairmount: Taste the Nation with Rybread Cafe's Multi-City Sandwich Menu (Fairmount/Brewerytown) - 07/20/10 02:33 AM
With a name like Rybread Cafe, you can practically taste the dark strong bread. The 23rd and Fairmount sandwich shop is new to the Fairmount and Brewerytown neighborhoods and it comes with a story that has some backbone to it. Owner Ryan has a background in architecture, a set of skills that we like to think is closely related to how well you can build a sandwich. That would make sense, right? After losing his job during the changing economy, Ryan set off for a road trip across the country for 7 weeks.
He ate quite a few sandwiches and then … (2 comments)

fairmount: A French Fling in Fairmount - 07/01/10 05:57 AM
Bastille Day is one of our favorite events to celebrate in Philadelphia - who hasn't wanted to run away to France at one point or another? Luckily, the Bastille Day celebration in Fairmount indulges us on these whims each year.
We did say indulge. The neighborhood whips up French dinner and wine specials at participating Fairmount restaurants and bars, French film screenings, and the Bastille Day Street Festival, which culminates in the annual Storming of the Bastille.
From July 8 to July 11, it's like a mini fling in France.

fairmount: Art in Fairmount That's Not in A Museum? You Got It - 04/22/10 05:50 AM
For one day only, you can find a Tuscan Sunset in Fairmount. OK, so maybe that Tuscan Sunset is the name of a cocktail with ROOT liquor that Rembrandts will be serving during the Fairmount Arts Crawl. Who isn't a sucker for a good sunset? It's the perfect start to an art-themed crawl.
Over 70 local artists will convene in Fairmount for the annual arts fair on Sunday, April 25. Each artist will present at a different venue, which encourages you to tour the businesses of Fairmount and see some really cool work in the process. We went through the list … (3 comments)

fairmount: Big Plans for Cafes in Fishtown, Brewerytown, Fairmount, and Headhouse Square - 04/09/10 03:39 AM
Who doesn't love a cafe in their neighborhood? We'll keep you posted on these soon-to-serve cafe additions to Philadelphia.
Brownstoner Philadelphia reveals that the former Allstate Insurance building on Girard Avenue at Day Street is going the cafe route. Brindle Cafe is the name of the new project that owner Scott Forman says will open in June. Another Fishtown coffee option? We'll drink to that. Temple students Phil Coles and Chris Banks head on over to Brewerytown to check in on the progress of the second Mugshots Coffeehouse at 2831 Girard Avenue and found out what the locals thought. Bodhi Coffee … (4 comments)

fairmount: What's up with...Art Museum/Fairmount - 03/22/10 03:20 AM
The Art Museum is a neighborhood built around and along the Parkway, with access to the city's museums, such as its namesake, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Franklin Institute. It is host to many major events and parades and is a popular stretch for joggers and marathon-runners. The neighborhood around it is quiet and family-friendly, with access to the largest and oldest park in the country, Fairmount Park. There are many restaurants located on Fairmount Avenue, in addition to the popular Halloween and Bastille Day attraction, Eastern State Penitentiary. Center City Philadelphia is only a short walk away.

fairmount: Own a Piece of History: Provenance Old Soul Architectural Salvage - 02/24/10 12:50 AM
Many home and business renovations in Philadelphia make use of salvaged materials, and it's quickly becoming common practice. Reclaimed architecture is the savvy way to inject personality and history into a space. The concept is simple: why not use something that's already made, instead of ordering new items, which may not be as sturdy or built-to-last as pieces that are still around? Provenance Old Soul Architecture in Fairmount does just that, by reusing building materials, objects, furniture and furnishings for last benefits. The environment suffers less. You save money. Jobs are created through deconstruction of existing resources.
It helps if … (1 comments)

fairmount: The Barstool Olympics: A Little Bit of Canada in Philadelphia - 02/12/10 01:33 AM

Ready for the 2010 Winter Olympics?
Wherever you are in Philly, there's a Barstool Olympics event happening close to you. Starting today, through February 28, five bars will represent their neighborhoods in a competition to see who can sell the most $3 Molsons. We're sure they've been training hard all winter.
What exactly are these pubs striving for? There are no medals. The event is actually a fundraiser for the Fraternal Order of Police Survivors Fund, which goes to the families of officers lost in the line of duty. In addition to the Canadian beer special, each bar will … (5 comments)

fairmount: A Sunday in Fairmount Starts at Mugshots. The Art Museum Area Philadelphia - 02/03/10 02:20 AM

If it's quiet in Fairmount on a Sunday, that's because everyone is at Mugshots Coffeehouse. Med students cramming in one last hour of study, a deejay recovering from Saturday night, we're all here. And there's definitely some volume in the room.
The Fairmount Avenue hub expanded last year to accompany all of the locals that flocked there for lattes and bagels. They pumped up their menu and kept the dessert case full. On this particular afternoon, the one item everyone ahead of me seemed to be ordering was the chocolate peanut butter bombe from Vegan Treats.
But it's not … (3 comments)
