A re-blog is limited permission to syndicate a post on the platform of the writer's choice.

A re-blog is limited permission to syndicate a post on the platform of the writer's choice. In this case, Active Rain allows the syndication to the main dashboard where one can send the work to (1) 5 groups, (2) team blogs and (3) the outside blog.

Re-blogs on ActiveRain can not go to Localism. If the work shows up anywhere other than where the original writer gives it limited permission to be (e.g. on AR) then it is a copyright violation because no one can cut and paste another members work. A re-blog is not permission to cut and paste.

A re-blog is not permission to swipe photographs, videos or artwork. One can not disassemble a post because one sees a re-blog button on the right hand corner. When a re-blog takes place there is an automatic embed back to the original writer's post generated by the software module making the syndication possible. It states where the info comes from (e.g. via Richard Weisser) at the very beginning of the post written by the author. "Site the source" is a very curious phrase for me to hear when one talks about a re-blog because the source is clearly indicated with the automatic, embedded link.

There have been a lot of interesting comments made in the Rain regarding re-blogs. I have no idea of they have a cap on AR. I have no idea if you can do too many or if doing a lot can affect the system. I have no idea if you can "abuse the AR re-blog button..."

What I do know is that you should be careful how you treat another writer's work regardless of your reasons for doing, or not doing a re-blog

My fave site explaining some of the re-blog software platforms is here: http://www.reblog.org/

I'll leave you with two quotes from the site that I believe are relevant to this conversation:

(1) "What is a reBlog? A reBlog facilitates the process of filtering and republishing relevant content from many RSS feeds. reBloggers subscribe to their favorite feeds, preview the content, and select their favorite posts. These posts are automatically published through their favorite blogging software."

(2) "Why should you reBlog? reBlogs are useful to individuals who want to maintain a weblog but prefer curating content to writing original posts. They can also enable organizations to tap the contributions of their employees, members, and communities-at-large in order to easily redistribute relevant content."

When one decides to republish relevant Active Rain member content by selecting their favorite posts to redistribute to their blog readers, one has the responsibility to respect the host network and original author who granted permission and made it possible to showcase the original work.

Do not steal content from AR and think it is okay to migrate it to another website without the proper permissions being granted from the owner. You do not own the rights to a re-blogged work.

Make no mistake about that... Not your words, not your pictures, not yours to decide to take elsewhere off of this platform. Siting a source will not save you from committing a copyright violation. Siting a source will not absolve you from infringement damages. If I were you, I'd get your permissions in writing with specificity as to what the owner will and will not allow you to do. A person granting you one licensed right is not automatically granting you all rights to their post.

Blogging can be dangerous if you disrespect the host's platform rules and the federal rights of others... Be prepared to take responsibility for your actions in cyberspace. One can not hide behind one's computer from the law.

Excellent.  I'm happy when folks reblog my posts.  One I wrote a few days ago has 5 reblogs showing.  That means 5 more opportunities for syndication of my post.  Love it.

I have never had a problem with reblogging in the AR system.  Goodness, I reblog my posts on my personal blogs, often post them with edits on my web sites.

Get the content out there.  Get some links.

Enjoy life.

Lenn, I remember being parked regarding this, even negative and afraid of it. It took me a long time to try it. When I finally did I was happy to discover that it improved my blog readership. People like variety and they love a well crafted work. With so many talented members out there giving permission to re-blog their work I see it as a great gift.

My fave response was when someone relocating asked me about GA. I re-blogged Julie Chapman's listings and got a slew of calls from officers who I used to work with who thanked me for sending them to her and Richard Weisser's websites. Quite a few friends are migrating south in a little while. It's nice to keep my readers posted on what is available all over the country with the push of a tiny green button (LOL).

I love re-blogging and linking to my friends' posts and websites. I like when I get interesting e-mail from people over seas thinking about relocating to the states and wanting me to help them plan for the future. AR ROCKS in this respect. There are so many wonderful ways to connect with people and this place drives traffic to my personal sites as well. :-)

Jeannette, I'm with you. Additionally, anything positive that increases a writer's ability to be found by people who normally read one blogger who are now being introduced to a new writer is a good thing.

Thank you, Gita. I read a few comments that really got me thinking yesterday. Then I got an interesting e-mail from a buddy who thought it would be a good thing if I put my two cents in regarding the subject since I was serial commenting on it across several posts (LOL). I'm glad that I did. Turns out I had a couple of e-mails on this subject that needed to be answered so I decided to build the post on my previous comments and answer my e-mail here. :-)

The only thing I dislike about reblogging is tuning in to about three people whom you follow and they all have reblogs....possibly ones that you've already read.  Perhaps there should be a time frame.  Perhaps wait 3 weeks to reblog?

I don't reblog often, too busy getting my own posts together.

However, when I read something outstanding and timely, I may reblog it to give the writer some juice.  I have a tremendous number of subscribers and this helps expose posts that might otherwise be generally missed.

Barbara that would never work, my dear. Think of it this way: your three friends would probably re-blog the same blog anyway. Where would you be then? With the same situation on a different day (LOL).

Lenn, that's a very lovely thing. :-)

Richard, thank you. I appreciate the feature. :-)

C: I'm still confused about the reblog. I was reprimanded for using it too much. I guess it was new and I got carried away or there were just alot of really good blogs that I wanted. I think that there are some that just re-blog for the points. I re-blog for the content.

Sandy C, e-mail me with the skinny on this story. I'm getting so many conflicting and curiously odd statements regarding this. I'm starting to wonder what on earth is going on. I remember the flack a bunch of people gave me because I re-blogged a post instead of writing an original one for the first post of the year. That was fascinating. I flipped on a few people because I thought the post was stellar. So what if I started the year with someone else's words on my blog instead of my own... You'd have thought I robbed a bank or something (LOL).

People are getting a wee bit out of control with some of their ideas of what should and should not be done with that button. Until the AR staff make an official re-blog rule or code the module to curb and cap its use, my instinct is use it how you feel or see fit.

What else can one do?
