Pitt Lake is the second-largest lake in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, being about 53.5 square kilometers in area. It is about 25 km long and about 4.5 km wide at itswidest, and is also the largest tidal lake in the world, its confluence with the Fraser being only a few miles upstream from that river's estuary into the Strait of Georgia. Its southern tip, where the Pitt River resumes, is 40 km east of downtown Vancouver.
The upper Pitt River valley is a typical U-shaped glacial valley in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia. The over-deepening of the lower end of the valley over the span of the Wisconsinan glaciation created a trough over 140 m below current sea level. After initial glacial retreat at around 13,000 years ago a saltwater fjord occupied this basin when relative sea levels were still ca 120 to 140m above current levels in the region. Unlike neighbouring Indian Arm and Howe Sound to the north this fjord basin became cut off by sedimentation of the lower Fraser River by ca 10,500 years ago and is now considered a tidal fjord lake.
When spending an afternoon on this lake it is not hard to forget that you are actually on a fresh water lake and not a central coast saltwater fjord.
Pitt Lake offers incredible recreation values and only minutes from Vancouver without a several hours long drive to the Interior. The north end of the Pitt Lake can be reached in about 30-45 minutes from the boat launch located at Grants Narrows Regional Park. Only 45-60 minutes from the Pitt Meadows Marina located halfway between Grants Narrows and the Pitt River Bridge. Pitt Lake is large enough to support waterskiing, trophy fishing, sailing and windsurfing without impacting on each other negatively. Waterfalls and wildlife encourage photo tourism in the area.
Many recreational properties dot the shoreline of Pitt Lake in such settlements as Williams Landing, Rainbow Falls, Osprey Creek, McPhaden Bay, & Debeck Creek. Property title can range from Fee Simple Title, to Leasehold and Bare Land Strata lots. Building lots and lots with cabins are available in all construction styles. Standard can range from spartan and simple to luxurious and decadent.
