Measuring Your Marketing Efforts

Many of us have or are realizing the importance of social networking sites and how they fit into our overall marketing plans.  Many of us read blogs, see mentions of tools (social networking sites, analytics, etc.) we feel we need, we want to use and that we go through the process of setting up.  But do we truly know how to measure the success of the marketing dollars and time we are putting forth and the time and effort to create and maintain them?  How do we know our social networking efforts are making a difference to our business?

This list contains 5 things to focus on and examine to ensure your social networking efforts will bring you the results you desire:

1. What sites work for you?

Unless you're some kind of superhero, you don't really have any business or you have more than 24 hours in your day, it's impossible to be on every single social networking site and do it in a way that's effective.  Explore some of the sites available to you, focus on the ones that make the most sense for your business - where you will connect with consumers and agents that you can learn from in sharing experience and information that makes sense for your business.  Once you've discovered the best sites "for you" - jump into the action but more importantly Listen to what's being said.

Listen

2. Listen

Now that you're there, listening is key to your success on these sites.  Find a way to help consumers or other agents with their problems by offering ideas and solutions.  If you engage with a consumer find ways to gage what they think about the real estate market and even more helpful your company.  Use this feedback and information, even if it's hard to hear, as a way to engage and show consumers who you truly are and what you can offer.

3. Engage

Time to engage and immerse yourself into the social networking experience.  Being on twitter, your blog, Facebook, Trulia and the many sites available gives you an opportunity to drive people to your sites.  If your sites are ready for visitors with ways of engaging them and encouraging them to interact with you further (Calls to Action, sign up for your newsletter, subscribe to your blog just to name a few) then you're opportunity for sales increases.

4. How to use them

Know how to use these sites and use them wisely.  Most importantly you need to know how each site works.  For example, many sites have tools associated with their site that makes the experience of using them that much better.  Twitter for example has a new tool every day or so it seems.  You can investigate with the helpful post from Regina Brown who shares with us some of the great tools she's discovered right here.

There are even resources to be found outside of these tools to help you improve your usage and experience.  One example is listening in to the JCKC Blog Talk Radio Show where Jason Crouch and The Ken Cook talk about all things Twitter and even add some valuable social networking tips and guest speakers sharing their experience, knowledge and helpful tools.  You owe it to yourself to become a fan and follower of this show.

5. Measure Measure

Measure how social media networking is impacting your business.  Social media networking has some great effects on your business as it drives people from those sites to the sites you own and author like your blog and website.  Examples of this are:

  1. Your search engine ranking, the growth of consumers subscribing to your blog feeds (track via feedburner), comments increasing on your blog and consumers engaging with you on your website through your calls to action.
  2. Another way to see the effects is to create a Google alert with key phrases, such as your name, your business, your community to see how many mentions you are receiving.
  3. Finally you can also utilize the many great analytics tools available to track your visitors and where they are coming from. (stay tuned for an upcoming post on this)

We can all find countless examples right here on AR of how social media networking has impacted many of our businesses.  The key is finding and using the right tools for your business - where you will have the greatest impact, reach and experience - one that both you and your consumers will benefit from.

How or in what ways has your involvement in social networking paid off for you? Share your experience and give hope to those that might still be discouraged...

Anne Marie,  I have just started reeping the rewards of my social networking.  It has taken some time, but the investment has been worth the rewards.

I agree with Frank & Sharon Alters, I struggle to find time to keep up with all the networking possibilities.  Thanks for the Google Alert- I just signed up for it and will see what happens.  I have been super busy with real estate the past few weeks- I can hardly keep up!  I hope everyone across the US is picking up!!

Anne Marie,

A lot of good content to digest! I must confess, we're getting busier and time is a lot shorter for blogging and commenting...!!! Thanks,   Fran

I'm still working on my social media plan and figuring out my ROI.  There's a lot to learn, and I feel like I've only made a dent though I'm working on it diligently.

Anne - Wow !  Great steps to measure that success.  It is awesome to see yourself crawl up the search engines for keywords, gain subscribers and clients as a result of efforts.  I have found that it takes providing consistent, quality content.  In addition, like you said, to then take that content it and leverage it amongst all these social media opportunities, engage with others and build a network !  ~ Chris

I thought I loved technology, but I am not getting the twitter hype, perhaps it is reluctance to be that tied to everything? Not sure.

8:16pm • #12

Great ideas, I must say I was a huge sceptic at all this Social Media stuff.  I'm also not a real tech person, I don't even have a blackberry or i-phone, just a old time phone that only makes phone calls.LOL

But then I got a great lead from facebook, and we just closed last week.  I love facebook now!  I have just made it a part of my day, I'm still not sure what twittering is but I'm going to find out.

Just rememeber what is said or showed on face book is said to the whole world.  Even though you might just be talking to old high school friends, keep it nice.LOL

Hi Anne Marie- Diligently working on it and waiting to reap the benefits. I am having fun with it though!

Appreciate the good thoughts.  It is very difficult to find the balance between "work" and "marketing".  Many days I'm doing all I can to handle the listings, offers, buyers etc that fill our days.

Russ - stick with it - there are countless examples of great success with social media marketing here and if you're consistent with reaching out and furthering that connection something great is bound to happen.

Bill - Hello Mr. SEO - you're welcome - I thought they were great too and I try to not look at the one or the quitter one - hurts my feelings - lol.

Huiting - you're so welcome - it's really a cool and informative tool.

Frank & Sharon - Me too - it really helps me to keep track of "hot" topics in my niche, my market and mentions of my company and me :)  I know what you mean - there's never enough time - just give a little each day to touch in on the social networking and build from there.

June - Awesome!!  So happy to hear that and that you posted that here to encourage others - thank you.

Sandy - this is true but it's finding the best tool or tools - be selective on what will work for you and give to it.  You're welcome on the Google Alerts - a great tool and must have.  Happy to hear that things are picking up and keeping you busy - lets hope it continues for all.

Bob & Carolin - thank you and I couldn't agree with you more - so important to measure what we're doing so we know what's working/not working

Fran - thank you and I'm with you - look at me at midnight responding to comments - it's crazy that we don't have time to keep up with it all - but I'll take it vs. having too much free time.

Christine - You are so right - so much to learn and plan.  LOL - I know what you mean about the dent - I feel that way myself - but it's a start right?

Anne - Yes, it can and I agree with your statements - managing our time and being persistent will pay off.  This is the way it's going - either jump on or be left behind is what most people say so I jumped.  Hope you have a great weekend too.

Chris and Stephanie - Thanks!  Isn't that the greatest feeling?  I'm still working on mine - I see to be so busy doing those things for clients that I'm always last, lol.  I 100% agree with that statement "providing consistent, quality content" is the key to seo and increased readership and taking it out into all the mediums to engage will bring great things to your business.

Heather - LOL - the key is to finding a tool that works for you and your business.  If it's not Twitter - and it's not for everyone, find one that will work for you.  Don't sign up because people tell you to - you'll just have a profile with nothing on it and time can be better spent using a tool that you can give to consistently.

Ginny the Riot - love the name!  Wow - what an awesome success story - congrats and you too are proof that great things can come of the connections we are making on social media sites.  Yes, see if Twitter works for you and your business plan.  I agree - the whole world sees it and it's important to keep it in mind.

Jamie - Excellent - hope it provides you with some great results.

Suzanne - I'm with you - working on it and have seen some results but want even more - is that being greedy? LOL  I hope great things come of your efforts and so happy you are making it fun.

Ray - yes, this is true - it's a balancing act and it's figuring out what's most important and what can be outsourced - don't ever discount finding people to help you with other areas so you can focus on generating services to your clients.  Continued success to you!

James - Exactly!  I feel the exact same way that you do - such an amazing group of people on AR so willing to share and connect.  So happy you have joined the group and happy that my ideas will be helpful to you.

Renee - So happy that my ideas will be helpful to you and I look forward to your future visits.

Sandra - thank you and so happy that you're a believer and that you are committed to that being a part of your business plan.

Virginia - LOL - I always suggest to clients to create a list or spreadsheet to know where they've signed up so that it's a reminder to visit and touch base as much as they can.

Lyn - thank you and it's always an honor to be recognized and mentioned on the feature board and/or the newsletter.

Sonya - Excellent!  So happy you've had some success with those mediums and stick with Twitter and see if it's something that will work for you - it doesn't work for everyone and that's ok.

Gene  - LOL - yes, in a way I am - I am suggesting to be a part of social media networking in a way that works for you.  Best of luck to you!
