Nick McKayI was speaking to a fellow player a couple of weeks ago and we were discussing our up-coming schedules. We spoke about the different events we would be playing and off hand I asked if he was playing the tournament at Savannah Lakes. His response?

“Hell yeah! I live for that tournament man!”

There’s a reason so many Hooters Tour pros love coming to McCormick, South Carolina, and it’s not the phone service or nightclubs; it’s the people. Every year the NGA Hooters Tour returns to this little hamlet it seems more and more players get housed, and more and more locals turn out to watch the fishing tournament, shootout, pro-am and tournament play. The event has become a popular stop for players and locals alike and the quality of the golf course only adds to pleasure we players take in hitting the South Carolina back roads and winding our way to Savannah Lakes once again.

Being a professional golf tournament, many would think that the intense competition doesn’t start until Thursday morning. Nothing could be further from the truth. For many of the players the major contest of the week has already been run and won. The annual Monday afternoon fishing tournament has become one of the most popular activities all year long on the Hooter Tour, and the competition has become more and more zealous with each passing year. It’s no secret there are some pretty serious anglers masquerading as professional golfers out here, and judging by the number of guys wandering around in the reeds earlier this week it appears that we have come to a fishing competition and a golf tournament is about to break out!

There are several players that must be honored for their achievements on the lakes
Monday afternoon.
  • Mark Wuersching showed that Aussies are more than just good-looking blokes with tremendous golfing abilities by taking out the event, catching an astonishing 17 fish in an hour and a half. I tried to tell him catching the same fish over and over in a bucket was not within the rules but both he and the committee overruled me.
  • John Koskinen won the biggest fish award, his whopper weighing in at a little over 7 pounds. Not a bad effort from “Gus”, but not as good as David Skinns who reeled in a 20 pound snapping turtle only to be disqualified for having caught something with legs.

When it was all said and done over 40 pros competed in the fishing tournament making it a successful afternoon in the sun. Thanks must go to the organizers of the event, and all the Savannah Lakes locals that helped out and came and watched. I would implore all the locals to continue to come out and watch the golfing action later in the week, but judging by the current enthusiasm levels, that’s not going to be a problem.

Hello William - The fishing tournament is a yearly event that goes along with the golf tournament.  The players enjoy it as do the residents!  The blog was submitted to the Hooters home page by one of the Hooters golfers.  Thanks for your comment!
