Ants On The Run

Looking at this picture it is obvious that this deck has some structural problems. First of all it should never have been built with 4x4 supports spanning such large spans. You can also see that there is earth to wood contact. The support beams are bent and warped and I can go on for a while, but then again I degrees from the point of this post.

Now take a look at this picture. As you can see there is some decay on this joist. As a matter of fact, this joist has already been sistered once before. A method used a lot here in the Poconos because it is easier and cheaper than jacking the structure to replace the joist.

What I wasn't expecting to find was this. This is an active carpenter ant colony busy at work. This is only one picture of an extensive amount of damage caused by these insects. In this particular case the infestation was found to have spread throughout a large area and more of the structure had to be replaced.

What's sad is that the owner of this home had the house exterminated last year for carpenter ants. Unfortunately the exterminator fumigated the inside of the house but didn't exterminate the deck area.

Ouch, that has got to hurt the ole pocket book. I have never run into Carpenters ants before although I have heard of them.

It wasn't too bad. We managed to bring in the repairs for under $1000.00. Exterminator will be another $300.00.

Barb, the funny thing here is that the homeowner had just had the deck stained and was told that she should have joist hangers installed. No one saw the wood decay or ant infestation. Go figure.

Hi Michael,

Sounds like a not too bad repair, not fun, but not too extensive. I Hope everything works out for the buyers.

Lisa,
This was one of those annoying silly jobs that could be knocked out by two guys in about a day, day and a half.

I wouldn't want to be partying on that deck with a bunch of friends. Too little support is right!!!!

Carpenter ants, they are usually hand in hand with moisture problems and fungi damage. Fumigating, especially during the day would do little, only killing some foraging workers. They are most active at night. Finding the source is the key of course and you found it. Sometimes people will call and say, I think I have termites I see saw dust! I tell them, it isn't termites cause they eat the wood and do not leave any saw dust but the carpenter ant and the carpenter bee do, along with some different beetles. Nice pictures, good post!

Russ,
Too little considering the span between each support column. It was common back in the late 80's and early 90's, but I'm not comfortable with it. I added a few extras as well as joist hangers.

Matt, I was pretty surprised when we found them so easily. There was also a secondary location within the same structure.

Pest control companies out here don't like to inspect decks or fences, and it's a very short flight or walk for termites, ants, and bees to move from the fence or deck into the home. I should start a pest control company. I could make a killing (so to speak) doing a complete job.

Hello Michael,

I just had my house treated for carpenter ants and yellow jackets a few days ago.

Enjoy the holiday weekend.

Many pest control companies out here disclaim decks and fences. As I regularly point out to my Clients, it's just a hop, skip, and a jump from that fence or deck to this house.
