There has been a lot going on lately when it comes to openid and basically who controls your identity, accounts, passwords etc on the internet. If you think about it controlling this mess has always been one of the biggest gripes when it comes to social networking. I always hear “but how can you stay on top of it all” Well traditionally it has been rather tough or at least sort of a pain in the hiner. Everyone always says how there should be some universal login but everyone in the tech industry has always said this will never happen. Why would Facebook and Google get along or MySpace or the zillion other sites? Sure the smaller ones band together because they are up against the monster sites but it really seemed like a billion to one chance that Google and Facebook would ever see eye to eye on this (although both companies have long declared they were open to this)
Then today the lightning struck or the fat lady sang or however you want to put it. Now you can login to Facebook using Gmail and a variety of other methods and it’s easy to do…imagine that huh?
Just go to Facebook and go to your account settings. There you will see something called linked accounts. Either use your Google account details or whatever you like. It doesn’t seem like much but in combination with the way these social giants have been heading it could mean logging into a variety of sites using your Facebook id for instance. Why would you want to do this? Well take a look at my site for instance and then scroll around and you can see how you can login using Google or Facebook. Well if you drop a comment there it shows what you wrote in Facebook. Pretty powerful stuff and yet it’s so simple huh?
