REbarcamp Charlotte General Session

I must admit, while I had been hearing about REbar Camps in Pasadena, San Francisco etc. I really had no idea what to expect when I arrived at 7:30am to help greet the attendees at the first Charlotte NC REbar Camp.  Here is what I learned:

The Program:

Attendees voting for their favorite topics

At about 9:00am we assembled in the main room to plan the first half of our day.  Organizer Chad Huck explained a few details and then asked for potential topics for our morning break-out groups.  After everyone had had their chance to suggest a topic, the sheets of paper with the topic were posted and we all went around making a hash-mark on the topics we would be interested in attending.  The results were tallied and the sessions and locations were determined by the number of votes.  We had three breakout sessions in the morning and two in the afternoon.  The leaders of each session were not predetermined and they encouraged group participation.  The only problem I found I had was that there were several topics that were on at the same time that I wanted to sit in on so I had to give up a few.

Random things I learned in the sessions:

Data

  • How to use our local housing market data on blogs and in marketing
  • Include market reports in the listing brochure box in front of the home
  • "I sold this home in _ weeks...ask me how!
  • Dedicate a blog just for market statistics; one for each community we serve
  • Email market reports to clients directly
  • I'm a data geek!  ( I won a t-shirt from Altos Research to prove it:)
  • Google owns YouTube (Yes, I didn't know this!)

Videos:

  • Wellcomemat.com is a favorite of many, Zipvo.com is another.
  • Make "chapters" or break up video tours of a home so that the client doesn't have to sit through a long video just to see the garage or kitchen.
  • Benefits of video:  Help sell the property, Help promote the agent and SEO
  • How to video tips:  Don't walk through a home...use a stabilizer and tripod.  Use a wide-angle lens adapter, use "Windows Movie Maker Software" and create two tracts, first video and then audio.  Use a microphone to do audio narrations voice over.  Use Soft Disolve to edit.  Practice!
  • Post EVERYWHERE...there are at least 12 sites including Yahoo, YouTube,Wellcomemat, Viddler, Tubemogul, Flickr groups (neighborhoods etc.), Flickr Pro
  • 3-step process: Edit video, write and make voiceover and add audio/music
  • Qik.com: phone live video and embed on website
  • Magutoo.com: Panorama shots
  • Get music for background:  Goggle "Royalty Free Music"....suggested piano based or guitar

Twitter:

  • Helpful programs: Tweetgrid, Tweetdeck, Uber Twitter, Twilert, Tweetie
  • Use one or more of these programs to organize your tweets into groups and keep this window open all day long so that you can watch for interesting conversations
  • Who to follow?: Local businesses, people who are following these local businesses, local people, writers, topics of interest to you,
  • Start a conversation, don't do hard sell as no one will follow you or care, just like blogging
  • Great example: One agent goes to Starbucks the same time every day and tweets about his "Character of the Day".

Marketing/the customer:

  • Jason Silverstein at the Charlotte Observer...@sleuth, observerinteractive.com
  • Use unique URLs to track results of an ad
  • Match your goals to the right audience
  • Target people who are looking for change
  • Zipcodes/demographics/behavior
  • Facebook ad locations determined by demographics
  • Google Profile
  • ENGAGE PEOPLE when using social media.  Join conversations, send personalized video birthday messages, send private video messages, don't just tell people what you are doing,

Jeff Turner at REbar Camp Charlotte

My 2 cents:

  • When Wayne Sutton tweets, people listen!!!! (Renowned social media expert walked into our session and everyone went oooohhhhhh!)
  • Jeff Turner likes to sit back and observe until a topic gets interesting and then he offers amazing insights into social media!
  • Debe Maxwell is much taller in person...did I mention that I am only 5'2"?
  • Chad Huck and his team worked their tails off to put this together.
  • There are 10,000 members of the Charlotte MLS and about 200-300 people attended and of those, many were new to blogging and some were from as far away as Florida.  Blogging 101 had the largest attendance of any class!
  • REALTORS don't get up early...when we started at 9am the room was about half full...in a few hours it was packed!

Leigh Brown and Downtown Dan

Leigh Brown and Downtown Dan had plenty of energy early in the morning!

Susie Blackmon

Susie Blackmon carried her huge camera around with her everywhere.  I hope she shares some photos with us!  It was great fun meeting her.

Some serious VIPs

ActiveRain and Altos Research sent the big guns:)  Jeff was very quiet but Mike shared a lot about "data".

It was a great day and I expect next year to be even bigger and better because I know Chad is already working on it!

Hi Diane...Like TLW I am still taller than you.  Please note that I deliberately included the word "still."  I don't know how much longer I'll be able to say that.

You did a fantastic job summarizing what took place.  You, and now we, have some great suggestions to mull over...and to implement.

Thanks,

Kate

Hi Diane -- Wow, beyond well worth your time.  I bet there are more things to do than time to do them in!  A good problem to have.

Hi Diane,

This sounds incredible.  I would be interested in this training.  How do I find out about it?

Diane, great information. I plan to attend the one in Denver on Friday. I'll have to lug my camera around, too. And post all the great stuff I learn as well. (I'm getting rather jazzed and it's only Wednesday.) LOL

Roy:  Thanks, I look forward to reading from others that attended as well.

Stuart: Have you read Brads blog today...Denver is going to be the best ever.  Have a GREAT time!

TLW:  I hate to tell you this but almost  everyone is taller than I am:)  But, Debe is really tall and very nice too.

Sharon: Thanks, I had no idea until I read your comment in my email.

Kate:  My to do list stack just keeps getting taller!

Chris:  Yes, I found the sessions were too short.  We could have gone on quite a bit longer in several of them.

Cindy:  You might Google REbarcamps to find out where the closest one is to you.  They are sprouting up all over.  The big one is this week in Denver.

Marianne:  Yours is supposed to be the best yet.  I hope you take a lot of notes for us!

Diane, how awesome that you got to attend!  I really like that everyone got to vote on the favorite topics, so there wouldn't be a lot of topics that were popular, while others didn't get attended at all.

Diane - well clearly you had a fabulous time with oodles of learning. That has been my experience as well. I see some consistency in terms of technology that people are using and recommening, which speaks well of it. There are so many great tips here - gotta bookmark. A well done post very worthy of the star!

Hi Diane (aka "Shortie")  :-)

I can't tell you how thrilled that I was to finally meet you!  You are just as nice in person--imagine that?!!  I'm not sure how tall I thought you were but, I'm never shocked that ANYONE is shorter than me!!  LOL!  Like Jason said, I'm only 5'13" --so, I've got you by a FOOT!  WOW!

Seriously, I am so glad that you learned all that you did.  Isn't Jeff Turner wonderful?  The morning of the camp, I asked him if he was going to teach a class and he said, "You'll see how I roll!"  And, I love that he just sits back, takes everything in and offers the most amazing insight--as he's sitting there, you can almost see those wheels turning, can't you?!  There were so many incredible folks there that I can't name them all but, I have to say that I am SO glad that I was able to help--it was definitely one wonderful experience!

OH, too funny about Altos--I have a GREAT story to share about that--I'll probably write a blog if I ever get a minute!  Mike is wonderful and I just love the way his mind works too--ALL about the numbers!

Next year, we're going to have to get you on board to help us organize!  We had a great time putting it all together--we all had out tasks and really worked well together.

Thanks for writing this as I have been SO busy, I haven't had time to download all of my photos yet--SOMEONE had to blog about it!  Congrats on that little gold star too!

OH, I forgot to tell you--

I was cleaning up during the very last session and in RUNS Chad--"OMG!  Wayne Sutton is here!!"  Everyone who was helping with the cleaning darted towards room 1 to see what the 'clatter' was about!!

After the event, I introduced myself to him and, despite being dressed in the pink 'organizers' color, he was not impressed at all--sort of blew me off!

Oh, well, I guess pink's not my color, huh?!  LOL

I still followed him on Twitter!  heehee

Hi Diane, What an informative Post. So how important was the " star" visitor? Especially if he blew off Debe. At lot less now I hope. Anyway, some interesting stuff here but I think what I was impressed with is that the talent is so rich and so deep at these events, they don't have to be trimmed and tweaked and all predetermined in advance. Sort of like what you need to know and give it to me on the fly. I like that it truly speaks to the idea that everyone participates and contributes. I liked the way you framed this whole event and shared the highlights. So far I haven't seen anyone lay that out before or perhaps I missed it but this was great.

Hi Diane - How is it we missed meeting each other other? Rats! Awesome take aways from Charlotte REBar Camp. If anyone would like to see portions of the #REBCCLT sessions, we should have the archived sessions posted at dakno.tv in a few days!

One more important item to note, if you do decide to attend an REBar Camp, go expecting to learn, give/share, and upon retun to your little corner of the world... implement! To go and not change how you do business is a wasted opportunity!

William:  Wayne Sutton has about 24,000 followers on Twitter and is considered one of the best.  I am following him!

Diane, what an awesome responsibility. But, I'll bet others will also document the event. Here's something cool that Kristal Kraft posted about tomorrow's barCamp.

We have Broker IPTV live streaming.  Folks who would like to watch can tune in 9:00 a.m. to http://www.rebarcampdenver.com.

Also, I'm posting an interview with Jason Berman on the site today. That can be heard at http://www.rebarcamp.com/denver

I guess if you can't make it, it'll be streamed. Whoo-hoo! So, exciting.

Your recap is terrific, not only for those who weren't there but for those of us who didn't take good notes because there were too many neat things going on.
