Why Business (and pleasure) Needs Cloud Computing for CMS (Contact Management Systems)

By
Real Estate Agent with Eau Claire Realty, Inc.

I have a need. Call me strange for having so many computers or computer like devices but I don’t think I am alone here. I need to get all my contacts, emails, etc all stored in a central place. Why? Because when disaster strikes what do you have left?

Yesterday my office computer broke. I don’t know how it happened and yes it’s under warranty but not having an office desktop sucks. I don’t mind working on my laptop and luckily I have one but it’s not the same as typing on a desktop. It also doesn’t have all the goodies I am used to. I thought I would be ok without the office computer working until it just dawned on me. All my contact info is inside my office computer. All my saved emails. I am always the one preaching backup your stuff and my documents are secured for the most part. In fact I didn’t lose any data I just can’t turn on the computer without a working motherboard. But I need access to my contacts and without that working I am out of luck.

But you see why I am out of luck is what I am getting at with this post. Microsoft sucks at syncing your information across multiple computers. There is no reason with internet access why I don’t have a complete list of all my contacts and emails on every computer I own. You see that’s where Google takes off and is great. They store that data in a central location, it’s not computer specific unlike Microsoft which doesn’t seem to get why this is important. Yet using Gmail as a CMS doesn’t work as well as Outlook. It’s a catch 22 and I am caught in the middle. Google did release a sync for calendar items and also recently a way to sync the contacts but it’s still not the same thing as having this data spread across every computer I have. I want my computer to act as a terminal to the central information. If I make a change it goes across all my computers. If I hook my phone up to this I want it there too. Why can’t we have this technology and why is it taking so long for this to happen? I can’t believe that its 2009 and we would have to manually enter contact information in each version of Outlook we use. Come on.

Luckily all my phone numbers are stored in my phone. If that breaks I am out of business! Scary...

Shane,

You can sync Microsoft's outlook business contacts manager with multiple computers.  You may have to upgrade your outlook for that ad-on.

Shane - ha! I have been thinking about the same thing. Most of the time I work on my home office desktop and love it. However we have 2 other computers. I don't like using gmail for business. We tried it for awhile. Now I'm using Firefox Thunderbird (very similar to outlook) but like you I want to be able to access it all from any computer. And one strange thing that keeps happening to us is that some e-mails only go to one of the computers or the iphone but not the others??? ~Rita

Yeah its hard to believe that this is so hard to do. I am going to try what Brian said. I have a copy of that somewhere and I didnt realize it could do that.

I was going to use thunderbird but it doesnt work on 64 bit computers and my home and office use 64 bit. Stupid me for being too high tech!
