The New Apple iPhone - PDA PhoneiPhone Display

Currently, I use a PDA phone, the Palm Treo 700wx (windows version) and have used the Treo 650p and 600p (Palm versions) in the past.  I like the ability to have my emails, messaging, calendar and contact database available to me without the need for my notebook.  I have also used the motorola razor and a few other models, but really like the Treo.  That is until the new iPhone

When Apple annouced the iPhone a few months ago, I thought that Apple may have something with this one. The iPod has taken over the music world, who knows, maybe the iPhone will change the way we view the phone, PDA and computer.  The iPhone is a slim, sleek device that offers a variety of features.

So what are the features of the new Apple iPhone?  Well for starters you have the phone and fully functional iPod music player, video, 2.0 megapixel camera, 3.5" widescreen display for the internet and a touch-screen control pad.  The AT&T network will provide a quad-band GSM/EDGE device, which can also switch to Wi-Fi networks automatic and seemingly effortless so you will be switching between cell minutes and Wi-Fi nodes.  A huge benefit will be the bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity to the iPhone and iPod.

iPhone KeypadUsers can place a call by pointing with their finger at a name or number in the address on the iPhone.  And interestingly enough, you will be able to send e-mail and check the Web at the same time while being on a call.  The iPhone operating system is the Apple version of the Mac OS X.  It provides a true push e-mail via Yahoo Mail (plus compatibility with your office e-mail).  There is a 2-megapixel camera and a 3.5-inch display with higher resolution than any current iPod.  It will carry a 4 GB and 8GB configuration and is targeted to be priced from $500-600.  Analyst are speculating a rebate or discount from $50 - 150 on the units.

Drawbacks to the unit may be the one physical controller and only a touch screen for a keypad.  Also, the only service provider will be AT&T.  Although, it is rumored that the device may be shipped in an unlocked status so it could be used with other service providers.  It is scheduled to be released in June 2007.

Questions I would poss to the Active Rain community are;

  1. Would you want a phone and MP3 player in the same device in the real estate business?
  2. Having a camera and other features are pretty standard for PDA's, but is having all this technology in one device, it this really what real estate professionals are wanting?
  3. What do you think of the one touch screen display?  No keypad like the Treo and Blackberry.
  4. Would you be one of the first to purchase this device?
  5. What are your concerns or is this what you have been waiting for?

Let's get some responses flowing here on what you want in a phone!  Provide links to other sources if you like.

Check my blog out about the Treo 700p.  In my opinion, the iPhone is no match for the Treo.

My main concern since I use a Treo 650 is that all my contacts would be transferrable into my next phone. Since you did go to the 700W, is that possible? As it is, I am a little irritated that the info does not sync perfectly into the right fields...is there a way to fix this so I don't have to type everything into Outlook? Thanks!

Eric, good advice!  This also gives time for others to try it out and provide feedback on it!

I also use the Treo on the Sprint network. My main problem with the iPhone is the fact that it uses the EDGE network to connect to the internet which is so much slower than the network that Sprint and Verizon uses. I access the MLS from my phone and this fact alone would prevent me from switching, not to mention having to transfer thousands of contacts to a non compatible system. The Mp3 capability means nothing to a REALTOR, besides the Treo does have that capability.

I don't think I'll switch just yet.

Terry, I too use the Sprint network and use the Treo 700wx.  I'm looking at the iPhone, but I like what I'm using now and who knows what will be provided!  Thanks for commenting.

  1. Yes
  2. On this phone Yes! I already can think of so many applications for the photo functionality.
  3. I think I'll like it. For me beats writing with a stylus or trying to get my fingers to stay on one key.
  4. Absolutely!
  5. No concerns accept that I won't be able to get one on June 29th!

The iPhone could be such a great real estate tool! Why? It is the first devise of this kind to actually include a real web browser - Safari (which by the way, is now coming out for Windows users too). Can you imagine being on a listing appointment and when the seller asks about your Internet marketing, you merely bring up your web site in your iPhone, turn it sideways to show your site in landscape mode horizontally and drill right down to where their new listing will be displayed on your site within a few hours of them signing the listing agreement? Or take them off to any other web site where their property will soon be displayed too - www.realtor.com, etc. The "wow" factor of that presentation alone could win you that listing over the competition and more than pay for your new iPhone.

Terry wrote - "I access the MLS from my phone and this fact alone would prevent me from switching". Hmmm. Is your MLS web-based? Well at least here in the Washington DC/Baltimore area, our MLS works just fine in Safari. So now you are browsing the MLS in a real web browser right from your phone, seeing photos of houses, virtual tours inside the MLS and much more, just as if you were looking at your laptop computer at Starbucks.

I really think we have yet to fully grasp how revolutionary the iPhone may be. Will others try to duplicate it not long after it's release? Of course... just like others have tried to come up with their own version of the iPod. We may just be seeing the future of all cell phones and PDAs. So stay tuned... we ain't seen nothng yet!

I currently have the Palm 700wx and I like it, the ability to receive my e-mail and files are really handy, Also I am licensed in Idaho  along with Utah and we can use the Palm for our key box locks which is really great for me because it eliminates another piece of equipment that I have to carry around. I was really interested when I saw the Iphone and would like to see it in action. I think I will wait for awhile to see how it works. I thought the face and key board looked very interesting.

Win, great comments.  I believe the iPhone will start a revolution of sorts, but currently I will wait for awhile to see how the technology develops, plus the fact I just got my 700wx about 2 months ago.  Thanks for commenting!

Debra, here in Kansas we have the same feature for our iboxes (key box locks) and like you, I like the fact that I can have only one device to use for some many of my needs.  It definitely will be interesting!  Thanks for sharing!

I love my treo so it will hard to get me to switch (not that I have the option, I am a sprint customer). The usability of the iPhone is amazing thought. Finally, a real way to surf the internet on a phone. Love that Zoom in and out feature!

Brad, I'm with Sprint as well and only have one tiny issue with my treo 700wx.  My bluetooth headset and phone sometimes get disconnected and I must reset the phone in order to get it to auto connect again.  I have tried just about every other way to connect the two, but nothing has worked so far.  I thought maybe there may be a software upgrade for the phone that might fix it, but haven't looked yet.  That's my next step!  Thanks for commenting!

It's in the software
You can expect a lot of software products for realtors to run on the iPhone.  Most MLS systems, organizational real estat software, transaction management software, blogging software etc.  This opens a full range of possibilities. For example, RealtyJuggler runs on iPhone.  So you get a full desktop real-estate contact management solution where you can access your info from phone or desktop.Scott SchmitzRealOrganized, Inc.

Scott, I think one of the most important software applications for us here in the Kansas City Heartland MLS system is the SupraKey for ibox lockboxes.  Top Producer is another applications which is used by a larger percentage of real estate professionals.  You make some good points and I do appreciate your input.  Thanks for commenting!
