Creekside Park - George Mitchell Preserve in The Woodlands!

Creekside Park - George Mitchell Preserve

One of the things that I LOVE about living in Spring/The Woodlands is our beautiful foliage.  With Creekside Park opening in Harris County we are now blessed to have a nature preserve 5 minutes from our house.  George Mitchell nature preserve has an access from Rob Fleming Park in Creekside Park.  It is my understanding there is another entrance from Flint Ridge but I am not familiar with it. The cool thing about this nature preserve is that it is open to the public.  That is right you don't have to live in The Woodlands to take advantage of the preserve.  I spoke to a park ranger recently who told me all The Woodlands parks and open spaces are open to the general public.

We have started taking out dog Dundy for walks along the trails and have been pleasantly surprised at how few bugs we have had to deal with.  With Spring Creek running along much of the trail I thought it would be a mosquito magnet but parks and recreation must be keeping it sprayed as it is very comfortable.

It is all natural but there are flag markers so you can tell where the trail goes. You can still see some of the ravages of Hurricane Ike.  It is interesting to see how the forest grows around the damaged trees when they are left in their element.

You can access this wonderful preserve from Rob Fleming Park at Creekside Park.  If you are coming from Gosling turn west on Creekside Forest and stay to the right.  If you are coming from Kukyendahl go east on Creekside Forest and you will see the preserve on your left.  There's a parking area and a sign with the rules of the preserve.  There is a leash law so you are welcome to bring your dog but they need to be on a leash.  I hope you enjoy the preserve as much as we are.

Howdy there Marchel

I sure do like the looks of the George Mitchell Preserve. You sure have a mighty fine slide show of the area. Makes one feel as if they are right there walken along. Thank you, for taken us to such a fine place.

The one place that anyone can always find peace and solitude is in a nature preserve. There is a certain peacefulness that exists in these, and it makes for a great outing for a family, or a great retreat for an individual.

Marchel - I can hear frogs in all sizes when I look at that picture.  "Redeep" is the sound of the little ones - while medium sized frogs say, Rivet - rivet."  But the big bull frogs go, "ROMP ROMP."

Nice pictures Marchel!

Don't you just love east Texas places like this one.  That is great that they have made a new park. Mu wildlife biologist actually prescribes killing a certain number of trees .  It keeps the bio system going and creates habitat and food chains.

DALE, Thanks for coming along. I'm thrilled that this is available so close to us.  For years we were out here on our own so I'm loving everything coming to us, including a preserve.

TOM, I love the solitude.  It's a wonderful place to go and connect with nature.

WILLIAM, I have always loved to hike and so this is great, just 5 minutes away.

MYRL, We do get those bull frogs going.  We have not had rain for quite some time and they are so quiet right now.

TREY, I expect Hurricane Ike took care of the trees that your biologist thought should be taken care of.  Years ago we went to Yellowstone before the fire and then after the fire and I must say I enjoyed the after the fire better. You could really see the wildlife after the fire.

RICKI, I have to give Myrl the credit for teaching me how to do the slide show.

Beautiful pictures Marchel.  The FIRST thing i thought about was the mosquitoes!  To learn the bugs was not a problem eased my mind a bit... Dundy seems to like the trail!

DEB, Thanks!  I know you have been busy with your friend.  I have been praying for her.

CINDY, Having grown up in Kansas with few trees, I so appreciate them now.  I would love being close to the bay but I would miss the trees.  It is too bad we can't have both!

DIANE, I have not had one mosquito bite as I walk along the trail.  Isn't that amazing with what is basically a swamp next to the trail.  Go THE WOODLANDS!!

Mr. Mitchell is a Distinguished Alumnus of Texas A&M University. I've had the pleasure of meeting him. The tennis center at A&M is named after him since he donated much of the money to have the facilities built.

I like your slide show because it doesn't have all the stuff that slide.com puts with it. What are you using?

RUSSELL, I did not know that George Mitchell went to A & M.  My son is probably going to be going there next year so I will be learning more about the University then.

JIM, I have to give Myrl Jeffcoat credit for teaching me how to do the slide show.  She wrote a post about animation blogging. For it to work on Active Rain you are going to have to be able to download the gif file to your own website and then use that link.  For some reason the animation does not work on Active Rain unless you do that.
