Twitter: Ego Gratification or Communication Tool?

By
Education & Training with MarQeteer

Once again, as Eric Clapton sang in the theme to the Paul Newman movie The Color of Money:

It's in the way that you use it.

First of all, let's do a reality check.   Unless you're Lance Armstrong, very few people want to know if you just twisted your ankle on a bike ride.  Unless you're Shaq or some other person with legitimate celebrity status, very few people want to know what you're having for dinner tonight.

More and more I'm seeing people use Twitter too much as a mass marketing tool (and an ego gratifier) and not nearly enough as two-way communication.   Now if you're a Tom Hopkins, Zig Ziglar or someone in the real estate world who really DOES have a large following, you're probably not going to be leaving many replies simply by the sheer logistics.

The rest of us have no excuse.

If you're using Twitter to update everyone on what you're doing, but you just never seem to have the time to reply to the "Tweets" of people following you (same goes for Facebook and other social media), you're missing the point and shooting yourself in the foot.   There's not a day that goes by that I'm not in a conversation with a client, friend and/or colleague who is irritated with a person who "is always telling everyone what they're doing, but he/she never bothers to respond to what THE REST OF US are doing."   This type of behavior comes across as very self-important in social media.

Social media are bringing larger numbers of people into close contact with each other like never before in our history.  A major by-product of that is your actions (or lack thereof) are leaving a positive or negative impression more quickly with more people than ever before in our history.

Take time to assess your actions and be honest with yourself.  Today's market is tough and it's only natural to look at social media and become enamored with the power to potentially generate business with soooo many people.   Just make sure you take the time to respond, because the way Twitter and all social media will ultimately help you business-wise is that people will get comfortable with you and feel like they know you...like you...and trust you.

This can only happen if you take the time to respond:)

Great reminder Mark!  I've been trying to work into more dialogue by picking more carefully who I follow ... and who follows me.  That way it's more possible for me to share and learn from what I see and what can be discussed.  It's easy to get caught up in the postings and forget to interject in all these sites.  They're great learning tools ...   Again, thanks for the reminder.

Twitter . . . tried it, have an account . . . but it wasn't all that (for me).  You mentioned the true "celebrity status" of someone.  And yet . . . I still could care less what Shaq had for din-din, or what spandax leggings Lance just bought.  There's a lot of successful people who avoid the lime light.  Others are attracted to it.  It's a very compulsive medium - that Twitter.  It's like Christmas wrapping paper -- either you save it after you've opened your presents, or you don't (and toss it into -- hopefully -- the recylcing).

I don't have anything against Twitter -- but just like to use this pic!  ;-)

P.S.  There's a group on A/R "Inspired by Music."  If you've not heard of it, maybe this would be a good spot for your post too!?

Great post! I love Twitter!! But you are right, you need to interact with people on there. I have found great people, design sources, blogs, and tons of other relevant things in regards to the real estate indusrty. It is a lot like AR, if you find someone on Twitter and you check out their web site, blog, whatever - You need to interact and let them know. It is a great tool, if you use it right :)

I use twitter and love it...I do not have a use for the people are who sharing their dinner menu or bathroom habits with the connected world.  I think that creates too many bad attitudes toward the platform and raises too many questions of "WHY?"  I teach an MCE class on social networking and online marketing and I tell my students not to put every move they make on there, because flat out, most of the world simply does not care.  What I get the most from is the tweets about blogs, interesting websites, articles, and events and I promote mine on there too.  It may not be what everyone wants to see on Twitter, but the mass majority of people I talk to don't care what people are doing moment to moment.  I guess I may have missed one of the points of Twitter, because I don't even try to have conversations on there and really no one has tried to engage me in one...so not sure how to comment on that aspect of Twitter usage.

I have a little different opinion of Twitter because I really enjoy seeing the "mundane" things people are putting up.  Yesterday I believe I tweeted that my cat just got in my lap and I was wondering if he loved me or if for that moment I was a cat chair - I thought it was funny, and so did a few others.

But I try to balance the mundane stuff I put out because I spent a lot of time working on Twitter.  I do get a lot of business myself from Twitter and I think it's because I've decided to engage in those mundane conversations.  And some of those mundane conversations have led to nice phone calls and even business.  So, i think it has to do with your personality, and really what you like to do with Twitter.

I do get annoyed when I see tweets that are obviously preset and are tweeting the same thing out every day, and I do unsubscribe to those people because I know they aren't really interested in conversation. :)

Great points.  I'm only just starting to use social media and I have noticed that a lot of agents are on the sites just talking about themselves and what they are doing.  Hopefully, I will get the hang of it and it will become an important part of my business.  It definitely has the potential.

Stacy, I LOVE your points there.  Especially two very important words you used:  "balance" and "engage."

#1, if you're engaging people that means you're getting in dialogues with them.  Which means it's about really connecting with people for you.

Secondly, balance is so very important in this because that's where people really get to know you.   Your comment (Tweet) about your cat connected with your followers because it was an honest comment (and I'm sure it made lots of people smile) and because you balance those comments with other comments.   People wind up getting more comfortable comfortable with you when they get to see different sides of your personality.

Personally, I've had a lot of fun with this on Facebook, as I have an admittedly hyper-active sense of humour and absolutely love wordplay...it's very "hit or miss" but I just put whatever is on my mind on my FB status.  Yesterday there was a good dialogue going that started because I posted this as my status:

"Mark Boyd is eating watermelon while I'm working and fighting the temptation to spit the seeds into the waste basket several feet away. Man, I'm WAY too easily amused:)"

Just a really goofy moment, but it's this kind of stuff that humanizes us to clients we're in contact with in social media and makes them comfortable with us.   And then we find out that many of them have the same thoughts!

Thank you again for the comment!

It can lead to a lot of wasted time and can alienate cliets just as much as it can bring them in. It is human interaction without really interacting.

Mark, you are exactly right. I have actually unfollowed people who only seem to write "Just posted on Active Rain" or "Just Listed...". Though these items are important, these proclaimed social media experts don't congratulate others on THEIR accomplishments. To me, they come across as self important, and are missing the SOCIAL part of SOCIAL MEDIA. :-)

Thanks for the great post!

Mark,

Everyone who uses twitter seriously will purge their lists of the one-way twitterers you have described so well. Hopefully, your post will keep some of us on here from being dumped like this. Thanks.

Twitter is so much more than ego and even so much more than business. Of course, I use it for business and receive biz from it. But I also connect socially with like minded people for my causes and passions.

But even better- Twitter is the VOICE for people all over the world. Nothing was more powerful than our supporting the People of Iran seeking freedom in Iran. You can follow and help the cyberwar at the hashtag, #iranelections. Amazing work is being done. SO much so that our state dept asked Twitter to please NOT shut down last night while Twitter was the lifeline for Iranian freedom demonstrators. Streaming photos, hiding profiles, it is all so amazing and what better cause to be behind than to help people have a voice when their govt shuts off the outside world. Katerina

I agree with your post for the most part, but its up to the individual to use it how they choose to.  Some people use it to conduct business, others use it to socialize.  I don't think its wrong either way!!

Thanks for the post!
