Reasons not to do a Facebook Fan Page

By
Real Estate Agent with The Virtual Real Estate Team 104556

First, let me say that I have signed up to be a fan of some Facebook fan pages. Normally they are organizations to do with Oklahoma City whether they are real estate related or not, cancer groups, non-profits, and organizations like Active Rain. So I am not totally against fan pages, but I think that that old adage, there is not enough hours in the day applies. At some point we have to draw the line on what we do, but also we have to make choices about how we present ourselves. Let me share with you some of my concerns about a fan page.

1. I have to have one just to have one. Do we have to have one of everything. A big problem is listed above. Either we spread ourselves to thin to actually transact business with real people, or we are afradi that if we don't have one then we might miss out on something. Ask yourself this question before you create a fan page, what purpose does it serve?

2. I have one with colorful graphics but no content. As the bloggers in real estate know you got to feed the beast. A fan page needs fresh content just like a blog, a web site, or a social network needs. It is much easier to maintain a friends page and update your status like you would in Twitter. If you have your blog post going to the friend page it should also go to the fan page. But ask yourself, do most people go to your fan page for content, or do they want to see multiple streams of updates?

3. Join my fan page because i've reached my 5000 friends limit. You kiddin me? You really have over 5000 friends really, or are you just a stat freak. I requested a connection with an out of state Realtor who gave me the option to join his fan page since he was at the limit. No place in the message was there a benefit, a reason, or a I know you. I am not going to be a fan of someone I have no idea about to endorese them.

4. Is it about you or me. I have seen fan pages that are truly a vanity page. Our industry is correctly making a change to customer-centric relationships. If you are going to glorify yourself then I am not going to visit. Potential clients will feel the same. If you can choose a specific topic maybe, like short sales and feed it, it may have validity.

5.  The fan page is just another distraction. Okay, this is where an even more personal opinion comes in. Why do we market without a direction? So many times on web sites, blogs, and social sites, we want to make sure that people see our every profile. This is where marketing becomes a distraction rather than a coherent structure.

These 5 reasons not to do a fan page does not mean a fan page won't be productive. There is a war going on between Facebook and Google for online dominance and Facebook is trying to hide links from Google and create a walled community. That being said if you forward all your blog posts, attach interesting articles, add a few guest commentaries, post some links that are helpful, and make sure that people are directed back to your primary page be it the originating blog or web site then by all means create it and promote it. Just make sure you have the time to sell real estate, and get some sleep.

Well said.  There are just way too many "things" to be part of, subscribe to etc on Facebook.

Joe,

This is exactly what stops me from doingit. I know that I will do it and then it will be deserted. Of all the social media I only follow AR, and it takes time and devotion. More could be too much for me.

I have a fan page and was just thinking about it today. I dont have enough time to devote to property market and work it. And debated to myself do I list stuff on my home page or on my fan page.

Joe - Well said, I want to make sure whatever social media I choose that I give it my all.  I don't want to have a page or a twitter account just to have one.

Heather, I have been gratified that my blogs which automatically become an update to the News feed is read and commented on.

Jon, I gave it a couple of tries, but it diluted my effort on my web sites and blogs.

Bridget, I do believe in having a profile and updating my status on Facebook. I don't have even 700 friends, but are they friends? I don't accept every request. I think it would be good to have someone post about how a normal Facebook page can work without huge effort. Of course. having your blog forwarded takes no time at all.

Michelle, I'm with you. I do have a Twitter account and my blog post do go to it automatically also. Twitter bears watching. Even beofre the publicity it got after the Iran elections, it's usage was up 1298% compared to 7% for Facebook. Of course, Facebook has over 200 million users, and 30% are in the US.

You are right Joe. I just don't like Facebook at all and this further confirms why.

We need to earn our raving fans via great service - not list them as face-less (haha) stats.

Great info Joe.  I am just sticking my toe into some of the social media, or will as soon as I replace my smartphone, so I am so into becoming informed before I leap!

Candice, I like puns and that was a goodie.

Pat, that look before you leap thang I wished I had learned in my youth. But then that is what being young is all about.

Caring expertise...knowledge for you!

An excellent post.    There is a "scatter gun" effect right now, as people struggle to figure out the best way to use these marketing options as 'true business" applications.    Very thoughtful points you raise.

Good advice. Everyone needs to figure out how to best use Facebook to reach their own goals. I have over 2,800 friends on Facebook but do not rely on that as a source for any clients. If I get a response that is wonderful.

I do use the ActiveRain feed to Twitter and the Facebook application to Twitter. That automatically posts links to my ActiveRain blogs on Twitter and Facebook.

Li, I will never forget Kris Berg and Inman News RE Connect in Jaunary 2007 saying that she only blogs because she is too busy selling real estate. She has profile pages, but focuses on her blog which is one of the best.

Roy, sounds like to have a plan and it works. Tweetdeck is another way to couple to Facebook from a WordPress blog. I do the AR feed too.

What if you did a fan page and no one joined?  That would stink!

Bob, funny story, I started a fan page, but decided to abandon it. Before I could do it a person who I haven't seen in over 10 years, and who tried to sue me once, non real estate related ,became a fan. It's a wacko world sometimes.

You have to remember that these secondary social media sites such as a facebook business page, twitter, etc are to be used to pull traffic to the media you update the most and devote your time to. You dont have to maintain them regularly. Most of these sites feed right off your active rain anyway and just help you get the message out. For example, when I post a blog on AR, it automatticaly sends a tweet out with a link to the blog and posts the blog as a not on my facebook business page. The facebook page and twitter account add no new time to my social media/blogging. They are just tools to reach more people....which is the entire idea...isnt it?
