Again why did we give GM and Chrysler bailout money? More fun facts about Detroit automakers

Ford, GM, and Chrysler love to tout how they are the only true "American" car manufacturers out there.  Funny thing because Nissan has assembly plants in Tennessee and Mississippi, Honda has one in Alabama, Toyota has plants in Kentucky and Indiana, just to name a few supposedly "foreign" car manufacturers.  Chrysler was once owned by Mercedes-Benz (out of Germany - remember Daimler-Chrylser) and now is part of Fiat (out of Italy).  So what really is the difference between these companies???

The real difference is that especially with the bailout crybaby Chrysler that they don't even use American-made parts on a large percentage of their vehicles.  Check out cars.com recent top 10 list of the Top American-Made cars:

1. Toyota Camry

2. Ford F-150

3. Chevrolet Malibu

4. Honda Odyssey

5. Chevrolet Silverado 1500

6. Toyota Sienna

7. Toyota Tundra

8. GM Sierra 1500

9. Ford Taurus

10. Toyota Venza

The crazy thing is that Chrysler did not even have 1 car on this list.  At least GM had 3. And Toyota has the most.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a slightly different list of cars and again, Toyota is on top and Chrysler is nowhere to be found.  And I give it to Ford, they did get 2 cars on the list and did not ask for a bailout.

So again why is the federal government choosing to bail out Detroit?  Former President Bush started all this bail out nonsense. It's too late now to go back and undo all this, but in the meantime President Obama needs to quickly figure out a way to get the American taxpayer off the hook once and for all for the questionably un-American car manufacturers GM and Chrysler.  If they fail, they fail.  If the American people wanted to own GM or Chrysler, they would have bought some common stock or at least bought one of their cars. (For the record, I do own a Chevy Blazer but definitely no common stock.)

Toyota and Honda do not want a handout - they figured the car business out already.  Make cars that Americans actually want to buy and stay far the heck away from the anchor of unions.

Rob, I think the urgency was the horrific number of jobs that would have been lost.  I would prefer to give our money to the automakers than to the likes of Wall Street.  As for making what we want, isn't that exactly what they did? We wanted ginormous trucks, we wanted ginormous SUV's, we wanted gas guzzling Hummers.  We got exactly what we asked them for.  I've owned two Chrylser cars in the recent past.  One was a piece of crap, the other is still on the road, 9 years later.  If we want to keep American jobs in America, we need to buy American, and not just cars!

Rob , I believe that starting the automaker bailouts may have been the biggest mistake of the Bush administration. I think he probably  wanted to give them just enough to hang on and than fail during Obama's watch. Once Obama took over it was nothing more than payback to the unions , who now have a large ownership interest in GM.Imagine if they would have taken the 60 billion dollars and used it to purchase 2 million $30,000 cars and then just given them away to people who needed cars. It would have stil pumped the money into the automakers but than they actually would have had to work for the money, this way the unions just had the money handed to them.

I will say GM cars had a lot of american parts in them until probably the last few years, I grew up in Flint and go there a few times a year and had many family members that worked there for the plants a lot of parts came from the US.

Terry - I do agree with you that the government was trying to prevent layoffs by doing what they did.  Unfortunately, both GM and Chrysler still filed bankruptcy just a few months after the bailout and then they started closing plants and dealerships anyway.  I can't figure out the closing dealershps thing. If someone is trying to sell your product at no cost to you, why on Earth would you want to prohibit them from doing so.  Makes no sense - I must be missing something.

My last 2 vehicles were a Jeep and a Chevy.  Both treated me right.  The big problem with trying to buy American is that very few products are truly made in America anymore.  Most items are made at least in part in China, Mexico, or somewhere else, so buying American is a nice slogan but isn't easy to do.
